Author Krys Lee discusses novel 'How I Became a North Korean'

With its nuclear threats and, more recently, its involvement in the Winter Olympics, North Korea is seemingly omnipresent in the news. What is often not reported about, however, is the North Korean people themselves.

South Korean author Krys Lee, assistant professor of creative writing and literature at Yonsei University in Seoul and author of "Drifting House" and "How I Became a North Korean," uses storytelling to show the human side of North Koreans. This past Monday, Lee spoke to a Poly audience about the plight of the North Korean people, specifically defectors, and read excerpts from "How I Became a North Korean," her fictional novel that tracks the journeys and struggles of North Korean defectors. She illuminated the danger that defectors and their families face when they decide to defect, detailed the oppressiveness of the Kim regime, chronicled the difficulties defectors have when assimilating in a new country, and closed by addressing the various ways in which identity is perceived. Later that evening, Lee discussed her book at the Global Initiatives Alliance's international book club meeting.
