NEW SECURITY CAMERAS AND A REMINDER OF SAFETY PRECAUTIONS ON CAMPUS

Dear Poly Community,

As you know, we are continually evaluating the safety of our community. On Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at 8pm in the Garland parking lot, a car was broken into and a laptop was stolen. In light of computer thefts both from cars and classrooms, the school installed video surveillance cameras in three high traffic lobbies on campus over the weekend. Garland lobby and both gym lobbies now have camera coverage much like that already installed in the parking garage.

These lobbies are high traffic areas especially during public events. Our goal is for this video surveillance to provide a deterrent to property theft and to help us feel safer in these spaces. Signage will soon be added in these locations to bring more attention to the fact that these areas are being taped by video equipment.

We would also encourage everyone on campus to continue to follow safety precautions in order to prevent any further incidents. As a community we share the responsibility of securing property, doors, and reporting suspicious activity.

Please help us by:
  • REPORTING SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY TO SECURITY IMMEDIATELY. The immediate reporting of suspicious activity increases the ability of security to prevent and deter continued criminal activity.
  • Securing your valuables in locked compartments. Do not leave anything in your car that can be seen through the window even if you will only be gone a short while. Put it in the trunk or take it with you.
  • Faculty and Staff: Please lock your office or classroom doors when you are leaving it unattended for any amount of time.
  • Taking care not to leave personal items unattended.
  • Reporting individuals who “tailgate” or enter secure buildings and restricted areas without keys or the proper credentials. *Tailgating is defined as slipping in behind someone else and entering a building without the proper credentials or authorization.
  • Making sure not to leave doors propped open without supervision.
Taking precautions like these can help prevent future incidents on campus. We are here to help you with any safety concern you may have. The security officer on duty Monday through Friday, weekends, and holidays carries a Poly cell phone. You can reach them at (626) 922-7043. You may also call Dave Yamaoka at (626) 922-7039 with any safety issues.
