Seniors honored at sports awards

With Middle School Promotion and Upper School Commencement on the horizon, another school year comes to a close. The Athletic Department held its Senior Sports Awards event last Sunday to honor seniors who participated in sports at some point during their high school career. This event also marked the last Poly Athletics awards event of their career. Three athletes are recognized each year for their outstanding achievements during their time as student-athletes at Poly. The first award is the Craig Sweeney Award. This award recognizes a senior who participates in more than one season of sport during his or her senior year and exemplifies leadership to others in sportsmanship, integrity, and enthusiasm on their field of play. This year’s recipient is Alec Walsh, who not only made an impact on the soccer field, but in the pool on the water polo and swimming and diving team. He stood out with his coaches for his efforts on and off the field of play and for supporting his fellow student-athletes by attending numerous other games. Two other seniors were selected as boy and girl Athlete of the Year. This year’s recipients were Franco Alonso and Ella Cornwell. Alonso shined on the baseball and football fields playing pivotal roles on both teams. Above that, Alonso displayed outstanding character and sportsmanship during his career at Poly. Cornwell is a 14 of 12 athlete, playing every season of her high school career, including splitting her time between softball and track and field during the spring season of her sophomore and junior years. She blew past previous school records in the discus and the shot put. She will continue her track and field career and take her talents on to college.
