PolyToday: Engineering class prepares for the JPL Invention Challenge

This year's challenge is called the "Upright Pipe Contest." Teams are invited to create a device that can position a plastic pipe that is resting on two support stands into a vertical position atop a small platform in under 60 seconds. The winner will be the team whose device places the pipe in the upright position in the fastest time while complying with all rules.
This week the Upper School engineering class made some headway with the challenge. After many unsuccessful attempts and design refinements, the team's perseverance paid off and the pipe landed in the upright position. Seniors quickly reset and launched the sandbag again. Again, the pipe landed as anticipated. While this design requires further refinements before it is ready for competition, students are off to a solid start.
