Duration: 3 weeks/ Session 1 or 2

Have you ever seen a fire performance? Have you ever wanted to learn how to whirl color and light around you like it has a heart of its own? Then this class is for you!
In this three week course, your child will learn the basics of flow arts with Poi! Poi are a Maori dance instrument made up of a weight on the end of a short rope or string, and flow arts are a diverse group of movement forms that often overlap with fire spinning and various martial arts and dance forms. Although classes will not involve any fire, students will learn how to make their own practice Poi with the materials we provide, and we will cover safety, basic technique, and move into more advanced tricks and improvisational performance. The pacing of the class is flexible and will be adapted to students' comfort and skill levels. Students from Grades 6-12 should come ready to move and play! No experience is necessary, and all skill levels are welcome!

Disclaimer: The use of Poi and fire performance is often linked to the exploitation of Polynesian cultures like the Maori people on Aotearoa. We will not be learning or practicing traditional Maori dance forms, but recognize the Maori as the original practitioners of Poi.
