Last Friday, both girls and boys Varsity soccer teams travelled to face the Rebels from Flintridge Prep. Both teams finished the week with big wins over their Prep league rivals. The girls played on Flintridge’s home field Friday afternoon. It was a tough game with both teams playing with their hearts on the field. Poly stuck first with Freshman Catalina Alonso scoring off of a free kick. The excitement from that goal exemplified the tone of the game. The Lady Rebels were able to tie up the game in the second half. With the time winding down, senior Annie Winton had a marvelous throw-in finding fellow senior Alex Treister who punted in the winning goal in the last minutes of play. The Panthers defense was exceptional with senior goalie Mia Fernandez leading the way. Fernandez had a number of amazing sprawling saves holding the Rebels to only one score. Poly not only defeated the Rebels in a great rivalry match, but they also upheld a 39-game Prep League winning streak. They continue working on their streak as they head to Palos Verdes to face the Chadwick Dolphins. The Varsity boys soccer team travelled to St. Francis High School to face Flintridge under the lights Friday night. The night air was crisp and full of enthusiasm as the Panther fans came out by the numbers ready to cheer on their team. The boys played a tough match on both ends of the field. After 80 minutes of play, seniors Ryan Ng and Andres Martinez tallied up one goal apiece and Panther defense only allowed one score on goal. The final score was the Panthers defeating the Rebels 2-1 in front of a great crowd. It was a perfect way to end the week. The boys face Webb tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 3:30 p.m. on their home field where they will honor their seven seniors.
