Story Corps - Capturing Our Oral Tradition 5-8
Teacher: Bonnie Castillo
Session(s): 3 weeks/ Session 1 or 2
Days: Tuesday and Thursday
Time: 3pm - 3:55pm
The mission of StoryCorps is ” to preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world”. In this class students will use the free StoryCorps App to conduct interviews with people who they admire from their everyday lives. The StoryCorps Project was founded in 2003, to preserve the oral tradition of the people who exist around us.
Students will learn about how to find people to interview, how to create meaningful questions, how to find the courage to ask for and conduct the interview, and how to LISTEN! Students will use the App to record and upload their interviews and share with the class, Interviews can also be uploaded to the StoryCorps Project in the Library of Congress. We might have a special guest or two visit us during class to be interviewed as well!
Students will need to upload the free StoryCorps App ( available for both Apple and Android devices) on a phone in order to record the interviews. StoryCorps has just developed StoryCorps Connect, a new way in which interviews can be recorded using video conference format in light of COVID-19. Either way, students can conduct interviews within the guidelines of social distancing.
Class will be conducted using Zoom. Students will learn about the StoryCorps Project, and learn how to use the app and resources. We will discuss how to find people to interview and what type of questions to ask, and how to be a polite listener during an interview.. We will practice by telling our own stories and might have a special guest or two show up in our Zoom class meetings that we can interview as well!
Each student will have an assignment to complete and share with the class during the next class meeting. Expectations: attend class sessions, engage in dialogue and brainstorming with classmates, complete interviews in a timely fashion, share interviews and their interview experiences with the rest of class, have fun
