Opinion Writing for Grades 4-5
Teacher: Emily Tom
Session(s): 3 weeks/ Session 1 or 2
Days: Monday, Wednesday and Friday
Time: 10 am - 11:15 am
This course will teach students how to approach, plan, and write a five-paragraph Opinion Writing piece. Specific areas of instruction include examining sample writings that guide students in developing and sharing their opinion on a topic through a cohesive opinion essay. Whether your student would like exposure to crafting structured opinion essays or would like to review and further develop their opinion writing skills, this class is perfect for them! Class will take place synchronously, with assignments completed asynchronously. The instructor will utilize Google Classroom, Zoom, and email to engage and keep in contact with students. Class time will consist of lecture with interactive opportunities to work on student essays and peer revise. Time outside of class may be needed, at student discretion, to draft and revise parts of student essays. The instructor will be available throughout the entire duration of class, including when students are in breakout rooms. All instruction will be recorded. Access to a notebook, and a tablet/computer with a camera are highly recommended but not required. Personalized feedback will be given to students regarding their writing throughout the 3-week session. No class grades will be assigned. Students are expected to be present, respectful, and participating, with their camera on, during class time, and ready to learn and interact virtually with others.
