I Survived Summer Reading 4-5
Teacher: Beatriz Ascencion
Session(s): 3 weeks/ Session 1 or 2
Days: Monday and Wednesday
Time: 11:15am - 12pm
Are you an incoming fourth or fifth grader who enjoys reading? Do you enjoy learning about history’s greatest events? How about connecting with others? Well if you said “Yes!” to any of these questions then you are in luck. Why? Well this summer you can spend two days a week for three weeks learning about historic events by reading books from the I Survived book series. Books from the series that will be read cover events such as the destruction of Pompeii, the American Revolution, and the sinking of the Titanic. Aside from learning about these events from the I Survived books, we will also learn about them from watching documentaries, reading articles about these events, and reading first hand accounts of what the experience was like from those who lived it. You will also be given time to connect with peers by discussing the book. How much of the book did you think was factual? What do you think was exaggerated? Was there any part of the book that was especially interesting? What would you have done differently if you were in the main character’s shoes? These are just some of the questions students will ask each other and use to think critically about the books. By asking these types of questions and talking about the text students will be practicing their reading comprehension skills and critical thinking skills. Best of all, at the conclusion of our book club students can expect to have a fun celebratory event to reward their dedication to reading and history!
Students will be expected to attend class two days a week for three weeks and will be taught synchronously. Classes will be held for students to discuss the assigned books and learn about the historic event mentioned in the text. Students will have read the book prior to coming to class so they can engage fully in the lesson. Homework assignments will include reading the book and completing select activities built to help students apply important reading strategies and connect to the text. The instructor will utilize Google Classroom, Google Docs, Google Slides, and Zoom to engage students in their summer learning. The course fee includes $25 for the cost of the books that will be sent to the student.
