Wohl '11 and Merryman '11 pursue professional basketball overseas

Daniel Wohl '11 (right) and Hunter Merryman '11 have both signed contracts to play professional basketball abroad, Wohl with Galil Gilboa in Israel and Merryman with Venta de Baños in Spain.

Both athletes were star players at Poly, co-captaining their senior Varsity basketball season and each averaging more than 20 points per game to help the team reach CIF Southern Section semifinals. After Poly, the longtime teammates were recruited to rival DIII basketball programs in the Northeast.

Wohl, an economics and history double major, attended Williams College, where he played four seasons with the Division III Ephs. He was a starting forward for three seasons and co-captained the team this past year as a senior. Wohl demonstrated strong leadership as captain with the most points and rebounds for the Ephs. His successful senior season earned Wohl a spot on five regional and conference award lists, as well as in the Williams record books as 14th in all-time scoring for the team. The 6-foot-6 athlete anticipates being played as a “small forward” for Galil Gilboa.

After earning an impressive nine Varsity letters at Poly, Merryman continued his career as a Panther, this time for Middlebury College. He played four seasons with their Division III basketball team, during which time the Panthers enjoyed two playoff berths in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight in consecutive years. As a senior co-captain, Merryman generated the second highest point-per-game average this season. The graduate, who earned his degree in economics, heads to Spain at the end of August, where his Spanish minor will undoubtedly come in handy.
