We are living through uncertain times. This enrichment course is a forum to openly consider such uncertainty through a process of carefully exploring prescient questions and investigating ideas out loud. Philosophy is born from uncertainty. It is a means of negotiating questions without the promise of obtaining hard and fast answers. Rather than grabbing at the first sign of seeming stability in order to lay these questions to rest, we will wander into the unstable grounds of reality. With discursive tools, we will move towards articulating the bridges which connect the abstract and the real, between precarious existence and the material world. By negotiating questions that have no correct answers, we may begin bringing them, and ourselves, into further focus. This course is extra-curricular by design. It is not required nor does it purport to advantageously heighten students’ quantitative abilities within academic classes. Open to grades 9-12.

Our class meetings throughout this course will consist of an organic, ongoing philosophical discussion stimulated by the questions we collectively bring to it. Gatherings will occur through Zoom. Occasional reading prompts and video segments will be sent to students to read and view in their own time between class meetings. They should reserve time for contemplating these materials in preparation for the next steps in discussion. Participants should arrive promptly to class meetings and be present for the full hour with a sense of openness, curiosity, a willingness to think out loud, with an investment in listening to each other.
