Poly Athletics Celebrates a Strong September

Poly Athletics had a busy September as teams began league play across the fall season. With the Upper School away for Outdoor Education this week, competition pauses until the week of Oct. 5. Here’s a look at some of the highlights.

Cross Country
The cross country team continues to build throughout the season, with 10 runners setting new personal records at the Rosemead Invitational. At the Chaffey XC Invitational on Spirit Day, six Poly runners earned medals by finishing among the top 50 runners in their grade-level races. Kylie C. ’28 placed fourth in her race, while the junior girls earned third place as a team. The Panthers will compete in the Prep League Meet Oct. 14, followed by the Prep League Finals on Oct. 31.

Fencing
Poly hosted the Poly Invitational Individual event on Spirit Day, with several Panthers earning top finishes. Ben B. ’28 went undefeated to win the event, advancing to the finals after a close 13-15 bout. Ellington H. ’30 also went undefeated to win the Novice event, while Micah G. ’30 earned second place, and Victor F. ’30 took third.

Girls Flag Football
Poly’s Girls Flag Football team celebrated the first win in program history with a 39-0 shutout against Ramona Convent. The team followed that victory with its first Prep League win, besting Village Christian 39-34 in a close game.

Football
The Panthers football team opened the season with four straight wins, including two home victories against South LA College Prep and New Design Charter School, and road wins against Calvary Chapel Christian School and Cate School. Poly entered the final weekend of September undefeated before hosting Francis Parker on Spirit Day. After a tough eight-point performance, the Panthers will use the break to regroup before returning to the field Oct. 10 against Sage Hill High School on Babcock Field.

Girls Tennis
After opening the season with two losses, Poly’s Varsity Girls Tennis team responded with a seven-game winning streak before falling to Prep League opponent Chadwick. The Panthers enter the break with a 6-3 overall record and a 1-1 Prep League record. The regular season continues in October and concludes Oct. 28.

Girls Volleyball
The Varsity Girls Volleyball team enters the break with a 10-10 overall record and a 3-5 league record. Injuries have kept several key returning players out for the season, but the Panthers will return from Outdoor Education ready for the final stretch of the season. The team will host its seventh annual Dig Pink game on Wednesday, Oct. 7, followed by the regular-season finale against Mayfield Senior School on Oct. 13 when the team will also celebrate its two seniors, Sona M. ’27 and Daniella W. ’27. The Panthers will look to finish the regular season strong as they compete for a spot in the playoffs.

Boys Water Polo
The Boys Water Polo team remains undefeated in Prep League play with a 4-0 league record. The Panthers competed in the Saddleback Boys Water Polo Tournament on Sept. 25 and 26, facing several challenging opponents in close matches. The team enters the break with an overall record of 11-5.
