PolyToday: Colors on the Move

In a leaf pigment chromatography investigation, students from the Class of 2032 recently used coffee filters to separate the pigments in leaves. After crushing the leaves in water and isopropyl alcohol, the sixth graders placed a filter strip into the mixture and observed how pigments traveled up the paper to varying distances, revealing a surprising spectrum of color within each leaf.
