PolyToday: Celebrating Hispanic and Latina/o/x/e Heritage Month

Monday's Lower School assembly brought the joyful sounds and rich traditions of Mariachi music to campus in a vibrant celebration of Hispanic and Latina/o/x/e Heritage Month. Students in Dr. Alan Wellman's music class and Cheryl Scheidemantle's strings classes have spent the past several weeks exploring the history and significance of this beloved art form, learning how its rhythms and stories reflect deep cultural roots (several photographs from the rehearsals are included in the slideshow).
Their study culminated in a special performance that paired our young musicians with an outside Mariachi ensemble, creating an inspiring exchange of sound and spirit. The event was made even more meaningful by the return of Poly alum and former director of UCLA’s Mariachi de Uclatlán, Maya Barajas-Tavera ’17.
Together, they filled Founders Hall with music that celebrated artistry, culture, and community.
