Life is Beautiful (1997), directed by and starring Roberto Benigni, is a deeply moving Italian film that balances humor and tragedy to tell the story of Guido, a Jewish man who uses imagination and love to shield his son from the horrors of a Nazi concentration camp. Set during World War II, the film skillfully portrays the harsh reality of the Holocaust while still insisting on humor and human compassion. Its message is especially urgent now, in a world increasingly shaped by political polarization, populist rhetoric, and nationalism. Screening Life is Beautiful now invites audiences to reflect on the real consequences of dehumanization and division, and to remember the power of kindness and empathy as acts of resistance.

In times when hate can spread rapidly through misinformation and fear, Life is Beautiful reminds viewers that empathy is not weakness, but moral courage. Guido’s choice to protect his son’s spirit through love rather than the cold acceptance of cruelty mirrors what societies must do when faced with hatred: protect innocence, truth, and one another. The film urges us to look beyond differences and recognize the shared emotional core that binds us all. Revisiting it is not just an exercise in remembrance, but a call to resist cynicism and hatred, and to believe, as Guido does, that beauty and goodness can endure even in the face of darkness.

Back to the Big Screen, a monthly screening series, provides the opportunity for the greater Poly community to experience a selection of cinematic titles in a big screen format in our very own Garland Theater over the course of the academic year. This chance to revisit titles that we may have never seen on the big screen will encompass the screening of a select film of relevance followed by moderated discussion among those in attendance at each evening event.
