Girls water polo beat the Pirates for playoff berth

Yesterday, Panthers girls water polo played in a wild card game to fight for a spot in the first round of CIF playoffs. The hosted the Pirates of Morro Bay. Poly’s stifling team defense kick started the counter-attack, which put the Panthers at a 7-2 lead at the half. Morgan Shafia tallied up eight steals, and Colleen Woo led the defensive effort with nine steals. On the offensive side of the ball, six different Panthers scored goals, led by Colleen Woo's five-goal effort. The Panthers ousted the Pirates from the playoffs with a 13-4 finish. This gives Poly a berth in the CIF Division 6 playoffs. Click here for the full Division 6 playoff bracket.

The first round of playoffs will be played on Thursday, Feb. 18. Poly will head to Santa Monica to face the #1 seeded Vikings at 3:30 p.m. at Santa Monica High School. Earlier this season, Poly lost to Santa Monica in a non-league game. With nothing to lose, Poly will leave it all in the pool and attempt to slow down Santa Monica's counter-attack with hopes for success this time around.
