Back to the Big Screen: AlphaGo (2017)

When: Friday, February 20, 2026, 7 p.m.-9 p.m.
Where: Garland Theater
Brought to you by the Computer Science Department

In 2016, long before AI-enabled ChatGPT would take the world by storm, Google's DeepMind division completed work on its AlphaGo program, an AI-based program that played the game of Go. The AlphaGo program ultimately participated in a five-game match held in South Korea against Lee Sedol, a champion Go player.

That historical match, pitting a person against a collection of algorithms, was a sign of things to come.

Join the newly formed Poly Computer Science Department at Back to the Big Screen with a presentation of the 2017 documentary AlphaGo. (trailer)

Back to the Big Screen, a monthly screening series, provides the opportunity for the greater Poly community to experience a selection of cinematic titles in a big screen format in our very own Garland Theater over the course of the academic year. This chance to revisit titles that we may have never seen on the big screen will encompass the screening of a select film of relevance followed by moderated discussion among those in attendance at each evening event.
