Poly College Counseling Goes on the Road

In the world of college admission, the annual NACAC conference—the National Association for College Admission Counseling—is equivalent to the Superbowl of college admission. The event is open to anyone in the profession, both from admission and counseling backgrounds, and from community-based organizations and companies that offer college counseling support. Overall, nearly 7,500 professionals attend the conference with panels spanning letters of recommendation to enrollment strategy, and lots of time for socializing and networking with admission leaders.

This year, Director of College Counseling Mark Rasic and Poly’s newest college counselor, Sam Schreiber, attended the conference in Houston, Texas. The duo road-tripped around the state with stops at Southern Methodist University, Texas A&M, and Navarro College. (Navarro was a special stop because the Netflix show Cheer was filmed there.) Mark drove while Sam navigated the journey, DJ-ed podcast recommendations, and made sure there was plenty of time for Texas BBQ.

Poly is thrilled that the college counseling team made the trek to Texas and were able to gain valuable insights from peers to shape the program, as well as connect with admission professionals from around the world. Though it is Sam’s second year at Poly, she has already made a big impact on the community and is counseling her first group of seniors.

“I’m excited for opportunities to engage with the Poly community beyond college counseling,” she shared after her return from the trip. “Whether it's having hermit crabs that people come to see, assisting The Paw Print, or going to a water polo game, I love meeting students in situations that aren't academic. It is important to me that they also see me as not just representing college because that can be so intimidating. I’m looking for a relatable way to connect with everyone.”

Though the fall can be a stressful time for students applying to college, we are excited to see the support Sam is providing to students and look forward to her future endeavors at Poly.
