With an eye toward taking the baseball program to the next level, the Panthers came together to form an American Legion team this summer for the first time in over 20 years. Returning Varsity and JV players combined talents with baseball players from San Marino High School under the tutelage of Mack Paciorek and Jeremy Cardenas. In June and early July, the team gained valuable playing experience through 15 league games against quality teams earning a birth in the Area 6 Championship Tournament staged at Jackie Robinson Field on the UCLA campus by virtue of their first place finish in District 18.
At UCLA, the team won three straight games over Vasquez and Santa Monica (twice), to capture the Area 6 title – earning the right to represent Southern California in the State Championship tournament in Yountville, California. Yountville was a fantastic experience for the boys, competing at a very high level in a State tournament with “win or go home” pressure. The squad beat a solid team from Redwood City, but succumbed to powerful teams from Mission Viejo and Grass Valley. Matt Morrish’s 7 for 10 hitting outburst in Yountville earned him Most Outstanding Offensive Player recognition from his coaches. With games under their belts and the camaraderie that comes from traveling great lengths to do battle together, the Poly program is looking forward to a great 2010 campaign. Lars Acosta, Logan Beerman, Matt Lochner, Michael Newkirk and Terrence Yen all contributed in the District 18 games. Charlie Baxter, Davey Feess, Brian Holman, Hunter Merryman, Matt Morrish and Matt Saeta all made significant contributions to the team's success.
