We’re absolutely delighted to celebrate Maya W. ’34, a bright and passionate third grader in our school community, whose poetry continues to impress on a national level. Her latest poem, "Fear," has been selected for publication in the Spring 2025 Poetry Anthology by Creative Communication. Maya pours her heart into every piece she writes, and this recognition is a beautiful reflection of her voice and dedication.
This marks the third consecutive season Maya’s poetry has been selected. Her consistency and growth as a writer are truly inspiring, and it’s clear that her creativity, unique voice, and commitment to her craft continue to shine.
Creative Communication’s anthologies aim to amplify the thoughts and feelings of young writers, and we couldn’t be prouder that Maya’s words will once again be among those shared. Her success reminds us of the power of student voice and the importance of nurturing young authors.
Maya says her inspiration comes from the emotions behind poetry. For her, poetry is a way to express feelings. “When I write poetry,” she explains, “I think about what I or others might feel in different situations. I wrote this poem about how fear can sometimes be a burden and feel terrible, but it can also be good."
Here is Maya’s poem:
Fear
Fear, it bites at you from the darkness.
Comes from the most unexpected places.
Attacks from the shadows when you're most vulnerable.
Burns in my chest, like a silent reminder I still have more to do.
Fear is a burden that cannot be lifted.
For it follows you in the shadows.
It never vanishes, just hides away.
It always waits for just the right moment to strike.
I will never be free of my endless fear.
But I won't let it take over.
Fear is a burden that cannot be lifted.
But it is a burden I don't carry alone.
Way to go, Maya! We’re all so proud of you and can’t wait to see where your writing journey takes you next.
