  • Exercise Activities and The Virtual Heart Rate 6-8

    In this class, students will participate in a variety of fitness activities. We will discuss how our Pulse and Heart Rate are important key components in our fitness and how to find and use our pulse to determine what we need our Heart Rate to be as we are performing fitness routines. Understanding our Heart Rate and knowing where we want our heart rate range to be during exercise helps achieve the best possible results. This information helps us gauge if we should increase or decrease the intensity of our workouts. Each week the students will discuss and perform different types of workouts while being conscious of their target heart rate zones. The class will explore various aerobic workouts utilizing strength, power, and endurance. They will explore agility workouts with a focus on anaerobic workouts incorporating footwork, speed and agility. At the end of the course, the students will create some challenge workouts for their peers. Each day the class will use Zoom to discuss and explain the topic or exercises for that day. Some sessions will Zoom at the beginning, the students will complete their workout, and the class will end with a debrief on how the workouts went and what adjustments will be needed based on their heart rate ranges. Students will leave this class with an understanding of the various types of workouts and the importance of understanding their own Target Heart rate range.
  • Animal Anatomy - Birds 5-8

    Amazing fact: Birds can fly! Compared to humans, birds have so many unique characteristics (for example, feathers, beaks, webbed feet, super-sharp vision) and live in such a variety of places (land, air, aquatic and marine). This course will explore all of the distinctive features and skills that birds have, the unique anatomy specific to birds, including birds of flight and flightless varieties. Students will become familiar with different categories of birds, and relationship to other animals, particularly reptiles. If time permits, the class will explore the evolutionary divergence from reptiles (dinosaurs) and species that have become extinct.
    This class will take place mostly in real time, with an expectation for a small amount of prep time outside scheduled class time.
  • Animal Anatomy - Marine Mammals 5-8

    Dolphins. Otters. Whales. Seals. Manatees. Polar bears. In this class, we will explore the large variety of marine mammals, the similarities and differences between them, and the specific anatomical structures that allow them to successfully live in the ocean. If time permits, the class will explore the evolutionary divergence from fish and how mammalian species returned to the water.
    This class will take place both synchronously and asynchronously, using Google Classroom, Google Docs, and Zoom (most likely) to engage the students in real time and to provide direct instruction. Class will meet on Zoom (or another acceptable virtual meeting platform) every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Students may be divided into break out sessions, or asked to complete individual tasks. The instructor will be online monitoring and directly available for guidance for the entirety of class time.
  • Animal Anatomy - Sharks 5-8

    Sharks are incredible creatures! Some sharks inhabit the top of the marine food chain, while others have plant-based diets. The most famous sharks have rows and rows of teeth. Some sharks have no teeth at all!
    This course will explore the distinctive characteristics and lifestyle skills that sharks have, the unique anatomy specific to sharks and rays, and their place in the marine food web. Students will become familiar with different categories of sharks and the variety of reproductive strategies utilized. If time permits, the class will explore differences between bony and cartilaginous fish.
    This class will take place both synchronously and asynchronously, using Google Classroom, Google Docs, and Zoom (most likely) to engage the students in real time and to provide direct instruction. Class will meet on Zoom (or another acceptable virtual meeting platform) every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Students may be divided into break out sessions, or asked to complete individual tasks. The instructor will be online monitoring and directly available for guidance for the entirety of class time.
  • Animal Research 3-6

    Animals are fascinating and children love them. In this captivating research/writing class, students will investigate their favorite animals and write multi-paragraph essays about the creatures of highest interest to them. The instructor(s) will scaffold the student learning with research tools and writing guides to make the tasks accessible. Furthermore, students will have the opportunity to create their own animal encyclopedia for keepsake. This popular class is perfect for computer savvy nine, ten, and eleven-year-old interested in delving deeper into the intriguing animal kingdom.
    This class will take place both synchronously and asynchronously. The instructor(s) will utilize Google Classroom, Google Docs, and Zoom (most likely) to engage the students in their summer learning. The instructor(s) will offer edit/revision notes to students corresponding through these platforms.
    We will meet on Zoom (or another acceptable virtual meeting platform) every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for 45-60 minutes of direct instruction. Then, the students will be divided into break out sessions, or complete individual tasks, for the remaining 30-45 minutes. The instructor(s) will be online monitoring and directly available for guidance for the entire 1.5 hours of class time.
  • Beginning Ukulele 3-6

    Learn to play the Ukulele. This class will cover tuning, holding the instrument, strumming, and how to read basic notation. From breezy island jams to all the way to Somewhere over the Rainbow, the students will learn how to play basic melodies and chords for a variety of tunes.
    This class will use synchronous lessons for the students who want to learn the basics of ukulele playing and technique. Breakout rooms will be utilized to create more individualized instruction.
    Materials: You will need to provide your own Ukulele.
  • Build a Sports Franchise 4-7

    Sports fans always have opinions for their favorite teams! You ever desire to be a general manager or an owner of your favorite team? In this class you will create a business plan of where you plan to build your stadium, salary cap for players and how the sports world can continue to provide entertainment for the world!
    This class will be a blend of Synchronous and Asynchronous classes. We will always meet live via zoom at the beginning of class to answer any questions or give advice! The first week will consist of breaking down operational cost, TV deals, and real estate cost in big or small city markets.
  • Building the Perfect Team: Designing an NBA and NFL Franchise 6-9

    Do you have what it takes to build a dynasty in the NFL and NBA? Students will be given a budget with the ability to create a new NBA and NFL franchise, where they will have to make decisions about locations, a team name, uniforms, coaching staffs, and players. This class is not about sports statistics but rather a class on creating the best team. Would you create an instant winner, a project that will dominate for years but not right now, or do you have your own strategy? We will discuss the business of athletics, the geography of sports, and have sports talk conversations of how and why you drafted certain players and whose team is the best. We will discuss the different philosophies of each sport and learn about the details of each league. Lastly, students will have to work to find the coaches, players, and crunch the numbers to understand the financial details that keep you within the salary cap. The class will be primarily synchronous with some aspects of asynchronous research time. We will spend a majority of the class synchronously discussing philosophies, drafting, and debating our teams. Students will be given in-class asynchronous time to research, update their draft boards, and create their starting teams. The expectations for students is that they are wanting to learn about the business of sports, are willing to spend time with research on players and salaries, and have a desire to learn new things.
     
  • Chess 1-8

    This class will teach beginner players how to play chess and to better acquaint them with this great game. Students will learn about the pieces, their movements, and basic strategies. There will be many opportunities for games against fellow players, as well as chess puzzles to help students become better players. As their knowledge of chess improves, they will learn more complex beginning, middle and end game tactics. Fun variations of the game, such as speed chess and team chess, will also be explored.
    This will be a Synchronous Classes. The first week we will be learning the basic pieces and moves of chess. The class will have fun games leading up to the last couple weeks where students will be able to compete in tournaments.
  • Computer Science Principles with Code.Org 6-9

    If you are interested in any aspect of computer science then this is the class for you! Computer Science Principles will introduce students to the creative aspects of programming, coding and decoding, abstractions, algorithms, the Internet, and the impact of computational thinking. By the end of the course, students will have an understanding of the fundamentals of computer science and an ability to accomplish complex tasks using coding. They will also have a chance to code and design their own website.

    This class will be run mostly synchronously, though students will have access to learning materials when class is not in session. Assignments and resources will be available on Google Classroom accounts. Students will be expected to participate in class discussion through Zoom at the beginning of class, after which they will be given a coding assignment through Code.org. Students are encouraged to practice and experiment with their code outside of class. Students are required to have access to a computer with a modern browser (not a tablet or mobile device).
  • Conspiracy Theories and Secret Societies: A study in critical thinking and writing 6-9

    What was the grassy knoll? Are UFOs real? Is Illuminati confirmed? Students will learn to develop and expand their abilities as critical thinkers by delving into some of the most discussed and argued conspiracy theories in the world. When people struggle to understand a historical event, they often seek an alternative story to better explain the who, what, why, and how. This is the basis for all conspiracy theories. Join this class to expand your writing and improve your critical thinking, while learning some of the most discussed and interesting conspiracy theories, while attempting to explore the not-so-secret, secret societies. This class will be synchronous as students will explore conspiracies and secret societies. This is a student-driven class where we will explore the conspiracies, secret societies, and other interests that students are most interested in learning. There may be time for asynchronous individual exploration but the majority of time we will be together, especially given the nature of the content.
     
  • Cooking & Baking 4-6

    Have you always wanted to cook, but weren’t sure how to start or were too nervous? Join us on our tour around the world from the convenience of our kitchens. We’ll explore different parts of the world as we cook up a storm – quesadillas, guacamole, tortilla chips, English muffin pizzas, chocolate chip cookies, macaroni and cheese, fajitas, guava & cheese pies, just to name a few! Plus learn some essential kitchen skills – like how to scramble eggs and how to boil pasta water! After taking this class, you’ll be able to help feed your family! So join us and learn to cook & bake with us this summer!
    This class will be held synchronously. In lieu of a materials fee, students will be provided a materials list for each project and will be expected to have the required materials at home for our class. Consequently, if students would like to watch the projects being conducted - they are welcome to watch the live demonstrations.
  • Creative Deconstruction 4-6

    This class provides students hands-on opportunities to explore the way things work. Students will use real tools to deconstruct common items, learn about the parts that make up these items up, and reconstruct those items to working condition. Items examined in this class will include, but not be limited to, staplers, solar calculators, simple circuits, flashlights, etcetera. So, if you’ve ever been curious about what’s inside something and how it works, then join us in Creative Deconstruction.
    This class will run synchronously. Students will get a short introduction and demonstration, then students will have the opportunity to participate using the materials at home. In lieu of a materials fee, students will be provided a materials list for each project and will be expected to have the required materials at home for our class. Consequently, if students would like to watch the projects being conducted - they are welcome to watch the live demonstrations.

    Students will be expected to be on Zoom on-time every day and be prepared with their materials.
  • Creative Writing 4-6

    Explore the world of the unknown through your imagination in this creative writing class. Students will gain knowledge of three fictional genres. After an introduction of writing techniques and character development, scholars will create their own short story/ narrative through guided live sessions and discussion. Students will be asked to create an illustration to accompany their story. At the end of the session each scholar will have access to their work as well as the works of their classmates.
    This class will be a blend of both styles allowing for students to gain knowledge through in class discussion and peer review. Students will be introduced to samples of writing styles throughout the term and will have to create their own original works to reflect their knowledge. Important aspects of story creation will be covered as in setting, character development, and how to create an engaging piece of literature. At the end of the session students will have digital access to the short stories they created.
  • Creative Writing 5-7

    Writing allows us to get creative, explore, discover, relax, and have fun. This course is for both the avid and the reluctant writer. In this class we will write short essays, stories, and poetry. Through various creative writing exercises, students will rely on their experiences, imagination, and teacher instruction to craft short essays, stories, and poetry. The instructor will help students with character and setting development, voice, word choice, structure and organization, dialogue, and more. This course offers students a creative outlet to let their imaginations run wild, learn to articulate their ideas, and develop confidence. At the end of this course, students will see writing as a way to understand and articulate the world around them.

    This course will be synchronous. Students will meet with the instructor every day during the four week session. Students will participate in instructor-led lessons and guided individual work during the online class session. There may be optional writing outside of class. Students will be expected to be attentive during the entire online class meeting regardless of the format for the day (instruction, individual work time, etc.)
  • Creative Writing 6-8

    Want to be a writer? In this course, students will learn techniques that professionals use to make their writing come alive. Every day students will have a chance to work on short stories and poems. They’ll also have a chance to share their work with their fellow writers for constructive feedback. By the end of the course, students will assemble a short collection of their work for friends and family to read.
    This class will mostly involve synchronous teaching, though students will be assigned short journal prompts through Google Classroom on a daily basis to complete outside of class. Each class, students will be presented with a new creative writing concept and engage in class discussion. Class discussion will occur through Zoom. The instructor will then assign a creative writing exercise that students will work on in Google Classroom. The first 2-week unit focuses on short stories and the second 2-week unit focuses on poetry. Students will have an opportunity to share their work with the class at the end of each project.
  • Essay Writing 5-8

    A course for any students who wants to hone their essay writing skills covering an array of formats (persuasive, narrative, and descriptive) in preparation for the next academic year. After a break down and introduction to each style, students will be required to create their own essay based on research, observation, and personal life experience. Through peer review, discussion, and revisions students will complete three original essays demonstrating their understanding of essay writing.
    This class will be a blend of synchronous and asynchronous allowing for students to gain benefit from classroom instruction and discussion while still being able to create original works independently. Scholars will be introduced to the structure of each writing style and then guided through the process of creating their own essay. Each week will consist of live discussion and peer review allowing each student to find support through the process.
  • Grammar Reinforcement 6-8

    This grammar/writing reinforcement course for Middle School students will include daily instruction and practice via interactive slides, journal exercises and online worksheets, assignments, practice quizzes and games. Students will experience at least 30 minutes of live instruction daily, with additional practice for the remainder of class time, during which the instructor will be available for consultation via zoom and email.

    This course is designed to introduce and reinforce basic grammar, sentence structure, and paragraph form to shore up skills expected in Middle School.

    Students will need to have access to a computer, with working video and audio, an email account (preferably gmail), access to google drive, a notebook, and pencils and pens.
  • Graphic Novel - Creating a Comic Book 5-7

    A fun class designed for 5th through 7th grade students who are interested in storytelling and art, and who love comic books. Students will be introduced to the principles of graphic novels, creating a story, characterization, layout, lettering, and design, with the goal of creating and illustrating their own unique stories. Students will express their creativity by creating their personal illustrated stories and sharing them with their classmates. Class will feature collaborative learning and peer review as part of the creative process, with a focus on learning how to give constructive feedback to their peers.
    The students and teacher will meet 3 days a week using Zoom. We will learn about what elements make a good story and will create drafts of our stories during the first class meetings. Students will share their story ideas with the class, getting valuable feedback from their peers and the teacher. We will discuss ways to give constructive feedback because this is a valuable skill. They will learn about traditional comic book layout design and begin sketching and planning their comic book. At the end of each meeting, each student will be given goals to have completed and ready to share by the next class meeting. Students will draw, color, letter and create a comic book story by the end of the Summer Session, and will present them to their classmates.

    Your student will need the following supplies:
    8x10 size drawing paper, Regular pencils and erasers, Colored pencils or pens, Ruler, Fine point Sharpie pen in black, lined paper or notebook for story ideas and sketches.

    Expectations: attend sessions, have materials prepared, be prepared and willing to share and show your work with classmates, do your best, show kindness to your classmates, learn ways to provide helpful feedback, create a great comic book, have fun!

  • Heroes and Heroines in Literature and Film 5-7

    From the magical powers of Harry Potter to the cunning of Katniss Everdeen, students will examine popular heroes and heroines in children’s literature. Students will read excerpts from popular fiction novels and examine film clips to compare and contrast characters in children’s literature and film. Students will then examine their favorite story character and what determine what qualities they possess that makes them a hero. Students will create their own hero and write their own Hero's Journey story using the monomyth structure.
    The class will meet on Zoom every MWF for 45 minutes each session. We will watch clips from films and read excerpts from popular fiction. There will be some minimal homework included in the course.
  • Hip Hop Dont Stop 6-8

    This class offers the opportunity to learn fun hip hop routines using age-appropriate music and choreography. Students will increase coordination, strength, and performance skills while having a blast! Classes will include hip hop combinations, exercises, and warm-ups for any skill level.
    Class will be run synchronously. Students will need wifi access, a screen, and a safe space in which to move around.
  • History of the Napoleonic Wars 4-8

    In the span of 30 years, Napoleon Bonaparte went from a lowly second lieutenant in the artillery to Emperor of France and the conqueror of most of Europe! His innovations in strategy, tactics, and army logistics helped him win a string of victories that make him one of the most successful generals in history.
    You will learn about his rise to power during the chaos of the French Revolution, his various military campaigns, and his ultimate downfall. You will also learn how his legacy has impacted European and world events in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Learn about this fascinating character and these tumultuous times in an engaging, interactive and multimedia online class setting.
    The class will be held on Zoom meeting app. It will be a synchronous learning environment. Students will be expected to participate in class discussions, role-playing, and learning games. Basic school supplies will be needed for notes taking and game creation. Common household objects might be used for props in role-playing.
  • History of the Western Hemisphere 4-6

    This class will offer students a virtual journey of discovery through the history of the Americas. We will focus on a broad range of topics beginning with the theories and historical accounts of how humans populated the Western Hemisphere to armed conflicts and pandemics of the modern era. Each of the four weeks will have a thematic focus; 1. Ancient/ Pre-Columbian Times, 2. The Columbian Exchange Era, 3. The Independence Era (1775-1900), 4. 1900- Modern Times. This is a great way to introduce the fascinating trajectory of our Hemisphere to elementary school students.

    This class will take place both synchronously and asynchronously. The instructor(s) will utilize Google Classroom, Google Docs, and Zoom (most likely) to engage the students in their summer learning. The instructor(s) will offer edit/revision notes to students corresponding through these platforms.

  • Hula Hoop Jam! 3-8

    Hula hooping is a fun form of dance expression that uses technical tricks and illusions with the hula hoop. This class combines learning hula hoop tricks for all levels and jamming out to your favorite tunes! Near the end of the course hoopers will learn choreography that they can perform for their friends and family.

    It is important to keep our bodies moving and to find ways we can enjoy ourselves with all of the changes lately. I hope to see some new hoopers on Zoom for hula hoop fun!

    This class will meet on Zoom (synchronous). The first class session will be an intro to the course: basic hula hoop trick knowledge and creating a playlist of our favorite songs. No hula hoop or activewear needed until the second day of class.
    Regular class meetings will look like this: 1) Stretch for warm up 2) Lesson on hula hoop trick(s) 3) Time for practicing trick(s) and asking questions 4) Jam!

    Tutorial videos will be available to hoopers who would like to take time outside of class to practice tricks that we have already gone over.

    How to prepare for this class: Have an open space to move around in (caution with the hula hoop if indoors). Wear clothes that are comfortable for stretching and dancing. Have a hula hoop by the second day of class (try some different sizes and see what works for you). Think of songs you love to dance to. And finally, be ready to have fun!
     
  • Influential Women - A creative analysis of Women who have changed the world 5-8

    Explore the stories of women who have shaped our world using their voice to advocate for justice. Through analysis and discussion students will be introduced to the lives of women and their works. Students will be asked to reflect upon and analyze works of art, literature, and the lives of these women, taking their knowledge to create an original work reflecting their own lives and hopes for the future. An interactive class suitable for any individual who would like to gain a better understanding of various fields such as activism, education, artist and politics and the women who have thrived in them.
    This class will be a blend of synchronous and asynchronous allowing for students to gain benefit from classroom instruction and discussion while still being able to create original works independently. Each week will cover influential women in different fields (education,activism, art, politics) and analysis of their works. Students will be asked to engage in class discussion and written reflections based on the information presented at each meeting. Special guest speakers could make an appearance to discuss their personal path and how they have used their life path to create change. Students will be asked to create their own original work that embodies who they are currently and the changes they want to see in the world around them.

    Money, money, money….money! If you are interested in getting a “cash” course in Economics and Finance, this is the class for you. We will have foundational conversations about Economics, business, and financial responsibility. We will talk about maximizing the money you make, making a livable budget, and understanding the value of your parents’ hard earned money. Students will be exposed to high school level ideas, in a middle school friendly manner, where economic policy and law, economic theory, and economic history is discussed. Get a jump start on high school Economics class and let’s talk business! This class will be synchronous as students will discuss economics similar to an Economics classroom. This is a student-driven class where we will explore the ideas and theories that students are most interested in learning. There may be time for asynchronous individual projects but the majority of time we will be together.
     
  • Introduction to Dungeons & Dragons Role-Playing Game 4-8

    Dungeons & Dragons is fun and exciting role-playing game that has been popular with kids and adults for over 40 years. Students will learn about the basic concepts of the game, create characters for the adventure, and embark upon a fun expedition into a world of magic and fantastic creatures! Role-playing will help the students engage their imaginations, improve their communications skills, and learn to work collaboratively to solve problems!

    The class will be conducted in a synchronous manner. Students will need some 6-sided dice, a deck of playing cards, paper and pencil. Students are expected to participate with the group and display courtesy and cooperation with their classmates and teacher.
  • Introduction to Fencing 3-8

    Fencing is an Olympic sport that develops both coordination and concentration, providing exercise for the body and the mind. Through group activities, students will learn the fundamentals of foil fencing: footwork, handwork, offense, and defense. Fencing is growing in popularity in the United States and on college campuses; this class gives students the opportunity to experience the challenges and excitement of modern fencing in a safe, relaxed atmosphere.
    The class will be held on the Zoom Meetings app. It will be a synchronous learning environment. Students will need to dress for light athletic activity; tennis shoes, socks, shorts or athletic pants, and a t-shirt. They will need to have a space around them in which they can move and is free of obstacles. Common household items will be used for props or substitutions for fencing gear.
  • Introduction to Sports Nutrition 6-8

    This course is intended to provide students with an overview of energy, hydration and structure – three areas that are key to understanding the basics of sports nutrition. Discussions topics will include: how nutrition effects performance, the macromolecules that provide humans with energy (carbohydrates, fats, and proteins), how to read a nutrition label, and dietary analysis. If time permits, students will learn about body composition and supplements.
    This class will take place both synchronously and asynchronously, using Google Classroom, Google Docs, and Zoom (most likely) to engage the students in real time and to provide direct instruction. Class will meet on Zoom (or another acceptable virtual meeting platform) every Tuesday and Thursday. Students may be divided into break out sessions, or asked to complete individual tasks. The instructor will be online monitoring and directly available for guidance for the entirety of class time.
  • Just Dance! 6-8

    This class will combine elements of several dance genres including theater dance, lyrical, contemporary, ballet, and jazz. Through learning a variety of dance exercises and combinations, students will develop coordination, strength, flexibility and increased knowledge about their own physical potential. Classes will include energizing warm ups, technical exercises, and fun routines for any skill level.
    Classes will be run synchronously. Students will need wifi access, a screen, and a safe space in which to move around.
  • Knit One, Purl One - Beginning Knitting 3-8

    Cool, cozy, and creative, knitting is a great skill, a life-long hobby, and a fun way to keep your hands busy during travel, while watching TV, and at sporting events. While creating a project to take home, each student will learn: basic knitting terminology, casting on, the knit stitch, the purl stitch, simple ribbing, and binding off. Students will be able to choose from a variety of projects. All supplies will be provided.

    This class is synchronous, and students are expected to be actively participating and present (barring technical difficulties) for the whole class period. The first 15-20 minutes will be structured around attendance, and teacher demonstration and instructions, with the remaining time for students to work at their own pace. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and receive help from peers and the teacher. An atmosphere of trust, mutual support, and social engagement will be encouraged – knitting is a fun activity to do together and you’ll have a new creative hobby to do after the class is over!

    This course includes a $20 Materials fee which will cover needles and 1 skein of yarn that will be sent directly to the student.
  • Life Journaling 3-6

    In this class, students will be taught how to use graphic organizers and the writing process to document their fascinating lives. Students will have the opportunity to author and illustrate a life journal that records their favorite “life highlights.” The instructor(s) will provide students with writing guide scaffolds to tackle the high interest writing prompts and encourage them to enrich their stories with sensory details, figurative language, and dialogue. This popular class is a great way for students to hone their personal narrative writing skills in preparation for the fall semester.
    This class will take place both synchronously and asynchronously. The instructor(s) will utilize Google Classroom, Google Docs, and Zoom (most likely) to engage the students in their summer learning. The instructor(s) will offer edit/revision notes to students corresponding through these platforms.
    We will meet on Zoom (or another acceptable virtual meeting platform) every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for 45-60 minutes of direct instruction. Then, the students will be divided into break out sessions, or complete individual tasks, for the remaining 30-45 minutes. The instructor(s) will be online monitoring and directly available for guidance for the entire 1.5 hours of class time.
  • Logic Games & Puzzles 4-6

    Need to sharpen your reasoning and probability skills? This course is designed to do just that through a variety of fun and interactive logic games and puzzles. We will look at number sense and analogies along with a many other logic based problems and how to solve them using your sense of logic! This class will run synchronously and asynchronously. Students will get a short introduction and demonstration, then students will have the opportunity to participate using the materials at home. Students will be expected to be on Zoom on-time every day and be prepared with their materials. Students will also be expected to document their work and submit it to me via an online platform, such as Google Classroom. In lieu of a materials fee, students will be provided a materials list for each project and will be expected to have the required materials at home for our class. Consequently, if students would like to watch the projects being conducted - they are welcome to watch the live demonstrations.
     
  • Mail Art DIY Envelopes and Cards

    Who doesn’t love getting a special card in the mail? Let’s make some art to send to each other! In this class students will create cards and envelopes with found materials, paper, collage, recycled objects, stamps, etc., and then mail them to each other. This is a free-form process perfect for first time makers and accomplished artists alike. Each week will have a creative theme, which students will interpret following their personal creative inspiration. Mail art began in the 1960’s and today is a global movement that promotes interconnection between makers by sharing hand made small-scale works through the mail. Come join in and keep this tradition alive!

  • Math Fun Grades 6-7

    This course will cover several topics taught during Common Core Grade 6 Math. Specific topics include ratios & proportional relationships and fractions & decimals. This course is perfect for students who would like exposure to what is to come in 6th grade math or need to review and further develop their 6th grade math skills!

    This class will take place both synchronously and asynchronously. The instructor will utilize Google Classroom and Zoom to engage and keep in contact with students. Class time will consist of lecture with interactive opportunities to work in groups to learn material. Occasional homework in the form of worksheets or Google Docs may be assigned. Students will be reminded and kept informed of these assignments through Google Classroom. If an assignment is given, the instructor will go over the worksheet and provide feedback the following day. The instructor will be available for the full hour of class, including when students are in breakout rooms. All instruction will be recorded and uploaded to Google Classroom (if possible). Access to a notebook, printer and a tablet with a camera are highly recommended but not required. Assessments will be given every Friday, but no grade will be assigned. Students are expected to be present, with their camera on, during class time and ready to learn and interact hands-on with others!
  • Middle School ISEE Test Prep 5-7

    This course is for students seeking admission to grades 6 through 8. We will be covering in detail the five sections of the ISEE exam; Verbal Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Reasoning, Mathematical Achievement, and Essay Writing. Students will become familiarized with test preparation strategies specific to the ISEE, and will have ample opportunity to practice their skills and receive immediate feedback with various practice exams and quizzes.
    This class will be a blend of synchronous and asynchronous learning. There will be 15-30 minutes of direct instruction and discussion based learning each class meeting (via Zoom or Google Hangouts), with the remaining time being dedicated to individual and/or small group practice (depending on the needs of the individual students). The instructor will be online monitoring student progress and providing the necessary support and guidance for the entire class period. The online format allows for students to receive immediate feedback from the instructor as well as plenty of opportunity to self-correct and review their peers' work during the 1 hour of class time. Also, students will have access to daily lessons and extra practice sets with access to Google Classroom, and/or Quizlet.
  • Mythology/Creative Writing- A Study of Deities and Symbology of Ancient Civilizations 5-8

    An analysis of symbols and folklore around the world. Students will learn about the mythology of three cultures throughout the session. After an introduction to each civilization, students will be asked to create their own mythology through written/ creative expression. Time travel through the study of symbols and deities of past civilizations while gaining valuable insight into the writing process of stories.
    This class will be a blend of synchronous and asynchronous allowing for students to gain benefit from classroom instruction and discussion while still being able to create original works independently. Scholars will be introduced to a new deity/myth each week. In class we will analyze symbology and meaning found in each deity's mythology and the impact it had not only during its own time period, but how the mythology affected future societies as well. Students will be asked to respond to short answers and create their own myth based on knowledge acquired. During live sessions, students will be asked to partake in peer review to allow them to further develop their story and to gage understanding of myths taught.
  • Online marketing and product making 6-8

    Are you creative and curious about graphic design and online marketing? If so this is the course for you! This class will help students create their online voice, develop creative content and designs, and tap into photography skills. Using tools such as canva, font squirrel, piZap, etc. Let’s get creative! Bring your willingness to learn and have fun! This class will be a combination of synchronous and asynchronous. Each week will cover a different theme or element of design. The course will culminate in a final project. Designed to be a practical application course for beginners. This class looks to expose kids to visual marketing tools such as logo making, photography, digital posters and ads. If you’ve ever had an interest in graphic design and are curious about the first steps to designing visual content, this is a good first step. Each session will be broken into ~30 minutes of instructions and the remainder of time for practice and office hours/feedback. Tools: Computer and phone with a camera or camera. All online creative tools will use free versions. No additional software is necessary.

    This course will review concepts needed to prepare for a Prealgebra course usually taken in grades 6-7. This course is great for students who are entering 6-7 grade math and would like some exposure to the concepts taught at that grade level or those who need a refresher course. The class will consist of direct instruction with interactive opportunities to engage and collaborate in order to enhance students’ understanding of the concepts. The instructor will utilize Google Classroom to upload material, assign homework, and provide feedback. Assessments will be given every Friday in order to check for understanding, but no grade will be assigned. Students are expected to be present in class with their camera on, take notes, and participate. Sharpen your math skills with this interactive course!

    As an English teacher at Poly for the past fifteen years, I can tell within a few days of class which of my students read for fun and which don't. There is no greater advice I can offer a student who wants to improve as a writer than to start reading interesting books. To write well, we need a rich vocabulary, critical thinking skills, understanding of punctuation, and a wealth of ideas. While we could study the dictionary to learn each word one at a time and we could attempt to memorize Stunk and White's Elements of Style, we would be much better off just reading books. This class will introduce students to books that are virtually impossible to resist.

    Class sessions will be spent reading aloud, discussing the books we are reading, hearing from other members of the community about their favorite books, and reading silently together. Students will be expected to read each night prior to the next class.
  • Study Skills 6-8

    The anxiety of succeeding in school can be a crippling experience for a young student. The number of skills needed for student success can be overwhelming. In this class, students will learn two of the most important skills: note-taking and studying. Looking at two of the most important skills for student success, note taking and outlining, students will learn how to successfully incorporate these skills to their academics. Students will look at how these skills can benefit them in a number of ways. Additionally in this class, we will look at strategies of how to decipher test questions and answer questions that you don't know. There will be no kind of questions off limit: multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, and essays. In learning to succeed on tests, stress will be reduced. But, we will look at a number of ways to reduce stress prior to testing, the stress that overwhelms students while testing, and how to deal with the aftermath of an assessment. This class will be synchronous as students need to be present to take notes and ask questions. One of the most successful parts of these previously taught classes is listening to their peers input on how the content can be modified. There may be time for asynchronous individual activities but the majority of time we will be together.
     
  • The Science of Myth Busting 6-8 (M-Th)

    Testing myths just like in the real MythBuster's show, this class will require you to use not only your academic skills, but also your imagination and creativity. Let’s figure out how to design our experiments in order to prove or disprove some popular myths in a variety of imaginative ways. We will inspire each other to wonder, design, test, and calculate in order to arrive at scientific conclusions. You will learn to use skills and develop processes to solve problems and ultimately, you will learn to think like a scientist. This will definitely be a fun and challenging class! This class will be offered as both synchronous and asynchronous to provide flexibility for the students. Students will watch videos, reflect, design and execute their own experiments each week. The teacher will be available during asynchronous class time for questions (aka office hours) or for one-on-one help. This class will require some common at home materials for experiments. A list will be sent in advance of materials needed for the course. This class will be an opportunity for students to tap in to their inner scientist through exploring and practicing the scientific method. The expectation of the students will be to ask questions and to solve problems using the experiments they design.   • Time Travel in Film and Television 6-9

    Have you ever wanted to travel through time and space? Have you ever wondered if time travel is possible? How has time travel been depicted in film and television? Let's explore this fun topic and debate its reality, mythology and depiction. We will watch some science documentaries, episodes of Doctor Who, the classic film The Time Machine and the Back to the Future trilogy. Could you go back in time? If you could, can you alter the past? What could be the consequences of changing the past? Let’s discuss and debate!

    Students will receive links for science documentaries from the teacher. The TV shows and films are available online and from Amazon Prime. Students will be expected to watch all the assigned materials before each class session. Class will meet via Zoom and we will discuss and debate the assigned materials. Teacher will provide a viewing guide for students before each documentary, TV show, or film is assigned so students can have an idea about what to expect in the class discussion. We will discuss how science views time travel and how popular media portrays it. The goal is to discuss and debate this intriguing topic. Students will have an opportunity to suggest films or shows that they personally enjoy on the subject of time travel to the rest of the class.
    Expectations: attend class, have materials prepared before class, all assigned TV show/films should be watched before each class meeting, take notes on your viewing guide to be prepared for class discussion. This is a discussion class so you need to participate and share your views.
  • Training Never Stops 6-12

    The pandemic has changed the way we do things, including working out. However, without the guidance of a trainer or coach and the absence of a gym or field, many people are struggling with the motivation and the know-how to complete a strategic, technical, fun, and challenging workout. This course will be providing all of the above and will allow you to keep healthy, strong, fit, and enhance your mood during this difficult time. The workouts will progressively get tougher throughout the course but will always remain at 30 minutes. The coach will use bodyweight exercise, high intensity interval training (HIIT), cardio, plyometrics, strength & conditioning, as well as adding in homemade weights from common household items to maximize your gains.
    Process (Where): These sessions will be asynchronous. Every morning, students will be provided a video of the coach’s workout for the day. The coach will guide the students through each workout and complete the workout with them. Students will then be asked to report the completion of their workout through various means (e.g., question on their favorite exercise / video clip of them performing most difficult move, etc.…)
  • Video Games and the Meaning of Life 6-8

    What do videogames have to teach us? In this course, students will have the opportunity to play videogames that shed light on certain fundamental questions (Are we living in a simulation? What is right and what is wrong? Do we have free will?) and exercise their critical thinking skills in the process. Through writing assignments, class discussions, and debates, students will learn to make and defend philosophical arguments -- and yes, they'll get to play games too! Students will also examine the roles videogames play in our social lives, culture, and media.

    This class will be run mostly synchronously. Assignments, videos, and short readings will be available on Google Classroom. Every class, students will be given a short writing prompt and engage in class discussion over zoom. In class, though mostly on their own time, students will have a chance to play several short games that illustrate philosophical issues related to free will, morality, and the meaning of life. Students will need access to a PC with Steam installed, and parents will be responsible for purchasing games (approximately $12 each week).
