    Did you know that you can make a compass using a paperclip and a magnet? Or open a tin can without a can opener? Do you like searching for treasure? All Hands on Deck! is a class that steps outside the pervasive technological landscape to help young learners hone critical thinking and survival skills. Each day, students will be faced with a new task in which they will have nothing but their own knowledge, newly acquired skills, and group collaboration efforts to help reach an end goal. Along the way they will develop self-confidence, independence, cooperation, and an increased awareness of their surroundings while learning how to engage with the world in new, exciting and practical ways. Among other activities, students will be building, braiding, fixing, foraging, navigating, and orienteering all while learning practical and gratifying new skills to navigate life’s twists and turns more thoughtfully, gracefully and thoroughly.

    Students will explore the globe through a combination of regional and cultural specific literature and tactile activities. Each unit will focus on a holiday or festival celebrated throughout the world. After an introduction of the region and event, we will being with reading corresponding cultural stories. Examples of these explorations might include Diwali, Santa Lucia, Children's Day, the Chinese New Year, etc. Students will explore these festivals by comparing and contrasting with other cultural celebrations and completing a related hands-on-activity.

    This class will allow students to explore different genres such as creative fiction, non-fiction, poetry and personal narrative. By examining different author's, students will be able to learn how to create their own stories. Writing projects will also accompanied with creative representation of their word through clay models, portraits, -and guided drawings. Students will also be introduced to the role of characters in stories, dialogue, voice, and style of different genres. This course provides a creative way for students to delve into the wonderful world of literature.

We will create our own calming kits too!

We will start off week 1 drawing with chalk pastels, week 2 exploring with paints and ending week 3 with a clay project.     The Exploring Science through Experiments course is intended to provide young kids the opportunity to perform experiments through which they learn basic science principles. Just to name a few, experiments they will conduct in this age group includes ice cream making, density layered columns in eppendorf tubes, use of basic medical instruments (stethoscope, reflex hammer, tuning fork) to understand how the human body works, and learning the principles of conservation using Newton's cradle. The second session of this course will cover different material, so the second session is not a repeat of the first.

    Get ready to dive into the world of American Girl Dolls! In this class students will come with their doll for a fun filled hour of crafts and more. Students will have the chance to share their dolls with the peers and learn about all of the different dolls from different times and places. In addition, students will complete crafts for themselves and their dolls. Each week will have a different theme in which the projects will be centered around. Themes include tea party, sleep over, and luau! It is not necessary for students to have an American Girl doll; all dolls and stuffed animals are welcomed!

    “Left, left, left, right, left. We're the best, we're number one. Now let’s have some math fun!” Fun with Math Games focuses on engaging rising first and second graders in specific strategies to build on and further strengthen math fact skills in all four math operations. This course is designed to encourage students to practice and reinforce math facts through a variety of math activities that involve iPad apps, computer games, cards, dice, board games, and flashcards to further their mastery of basic facts. The extra practice is critical to each student’s math success and developing the automaticity of facts. Some games will include Double Trouble, Half as Much, Baseball Math, Defensive Struggle, Number Maker, Knock-Off Numbers, Pyramid Math, Dollar Race, Murb, Crazy Cone and many more.

    Handwriting structures thought and creativity in a way keyboard and tablet typing can't.The movement of the hand stimulates the muscles involved in writing as well as the process of thinking. The successive construction of letters and words is more fluid and allows children to remember words and bridge ideas. In this class, we will review the basics of Print writing and explore some fundamental cursive. The goal is to build confidence while improving each student's hand-eye coordination, hand muscle building and, most importantly, allow them to construct words, phrases and sentences with beautiful penmanship while learning to love their own writing.

    Students will explore the global environment through a combination of literature, short videos and hands-on activities. We will begin with an introduction to the variety of habitats on our planet. From there, we will dive in to spend a few days exploring each biome, including the rainforest, desert, ocean and arctic. We will focus on the temperatures, animals and distinct features of each. We will finalize each unit with a tactile element, such as nature walks, painting, model magic creations, or dioramas.

    Typing is a basic skill that needs time and practice to develop. Young kids have a great capacity to learn. When they start learning the position of characters on the keyboard at an early age, they have a much better chance of building up high-accuracy for the future. In this entry level class, students play fun keyboarding games as they become familiar with the keyboard!

    Inspiring ordinary children to do extraordinary things is what this class is all about. Not every child will be an entrepreneur when he or she grows up, but through this course we can inspire every child to have an entrepreneurial spirit.

    Have you ever thought about creating your own business in a real-world environment? Ever wished you knew the wonders of how to create products that will make others happy? Developing a business, earning cash, saving, and donating to worthy causes are key components to our Financial Literacy class. The Financial Literacy class will be filled with an abundance of activities that will take you on a journey to be remembered!! Each child will work on a team and create a business that they can develop and share with others. In this course, students will get into small groups, according to the businesses of interest, come up with a plan of what they would like to sell and create a budget. They will fill out an application, elect Vice Presidents (of marketing, finance, publicity), and elect their CEO. In addition, students will also work with a Graphic Designer and create their own company logo. Some of the companies they could develop might be a Beverage Bar, Bakery Business, T-Shirt Company, and other creative possibilities. Join us for a session of fun and adventure.

    Educational Benefits and Objectives ~ The skills students can develop through this course is to lead with confidence, use good critical thinking skills, understand and value teamwork, and to become financially responsible. Each company will work with a banker from Wells Fargo and also local business owners to assist with business plans and strategies on how to run a successful business.

Through the journey of this course, students will gain an understanding of the addition and subtraction families, gain an understanding of multiplication as repeated addition and identify division facts and its relationship to multiplication. We will also increase speed and accuracy of basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. Join us in a math fact lab created by our own math team. Yes, that is each of you! We will design the space to help bring math facts to life in an exciting and creative way. While this course is designed for students to practice and potentially master multiplication and division facts by means of games, drills, oral and written practice, the students will also learn how to identify and apply tips and tricks related to fact fluency.     Number sense is the intuitive feel for numbers and their relationships. The course is designed to help the young student, entering first & second grade in the fall of 2020, achieve a better sense of numbers and their relationships through fun games, puzzles, and projects. Students who achieve a strong understanding of how numbers relate to each other are better equipped to understand and utilize all the basic mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as a conceptual understanding of fractions.

    Students will learn Spanish vocabulary as they listen to, re-construct, illustrate, narrate and perform the content in Spanish of some of the Classic stories from the most well known Classic authors: Charles Perrault, Lewis Carroll, Grimm Brothers, Hans Christian Anderson, Carlo Collodi, Alexander Afanasyev. There will be one to three stories per week from different authors.

Students will listen to stories and complete a collaborative STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) project connected to the story. They will leave the course with an inspiration to try new things and think outside the box. Full STEAM ahead!

    Join summer clay class for fun with clay all summer long! Students will explore a variety of ceramics handbuilding techniques including slab, pinch, and coil methods as they create exciting handmade pieces. They will also learn about how to glaze and decorate their art using a range of methods. Projects for 2020 may include mini dinosaur sculptures, keychain and necklace charms, and clay fishbowl portraits.
  • Summertime Crafts K-2

    This is a traditional camp-craft based course in which our younger students can explore their more creative and artistic abilities. This is a great way for them to unwind after a full day of summer classes. Students will be encouraged to use their imagination and work with all sorts of craft materials. Some activities include making seashore wind chimes, stone planters, kites, bottle cap jewelry, tie dye, lanterns and lots of projects from nature and recycled items. Students will also be water coloring and working with clay. Crafts will be different for both sessions.
  • Swim, Swim, Swim 1-5

    The goal of this class is to have fun and gain a love of swimming. Students will be put into groups according to their ability; some students are learning to swim while others will be improving technique and learning new strokes. Daily, students will do a warm-up activity, a swim lesson, and finish the class with free time to play or practice new skills. Swimsuit, towel, and shoes are necessary.
  • That's Gross! That's Stinky! It's Science! K-1

    This course is designed for young scientists to explore the silly and smelly side of science. Each lesson is fun and interactive with hands-on experiments that dive into the reasons why things occur in the body. The focus of this course will be lessons on why certain “daily functions” occur or happen. This course will also encourage social interactions and humor all while engaging in scientific reasoning. From growing a germ garden, to exploring how germs travel, or observing the chemical reactions of different substances each student will enjoy the stinky, crusty, and sometimes slimy side of science. Please keep in mind that a variety of foods will be used in conducting these experiments.

Finally, we will work on personal story books to ractice writing skills.

By means of project-based learning activities and opportunities, each student will further their understanding of how S.T.E.A.M can be applied in a variety of ways thus expanding their design and critical thinking skills, enhance their ability to question and wonder, and effectively communicate their thinking in a fun and engaging way. Plus, who wouldn’t want to be creative or play with Legos!
  • Water Play of All Sorts K-2

    What better way for your child to relax and exercise than an hour of water play on a sunny afternoon? They will be playing a wide range of water themed games such as sponge tag, slip & slide, beach towel volleyball, sponge relay, wet and wild kick ball, splish-splish-splash, and water balloon toss amongst a range of other water based games. This class is designed to invigorate your child after a busy morning in the Poly Summer program. Students are required to bring their bathing suits to this class. This class may be repeated in the second session.

    Shorely you will want to dive into learning about life under the sea! From dolphins and sharks to seahorses and sea turtles (and otters and octopuses, oh my!), we will fish for knowledge while discovering the wonders of ocean life. From under the sea, we will adventure ashore to explore tide pool creatures such as anemones, urchins and sea stars. Awareness of habitats, environmentally safe practices and endangered ocean species will be discovered along the way. And since we can't explore the ocean, the ocean will come to us in tanks and touch trays for a hands-on culmination of our oceanography adventure. Subject to availability.
    But beware, matey and scallywag, o’ scurvy Pirate Fridays, as treasure hunts abound and pirate tales and booty provide swashbuckling fun. Who knows wha’ may ensue when the’ Jolly Roger be a’ flyin’! Savvy?

  • Word Study - Mastering Phonics Grade 1

    Got the phonics blues? Does sounding out words to read or spell feel like an uphill battle? Then this may be the class for you! In this class, students will develop strategies for sounding out and identifying features of words. Students will also work with word patterns and sight words, focusing on beginning and ending sounds, short vowels, blends, digraphs, and possibly some long vowel patterns. Through hands-on activities and games, word study can be lots of fun! Please note, classes in both sessions will cover the same content.
