Making the transition from Poly to college

The College Counseling program is a natural extension of Poly’s mission to develop the intellect, talents, and character of each student. Poly believe strongly that the college search and application process is developmental and student-centered.

College Counseling at Poly is a customized process that provides students with opportunities for self-reflection, personal growth, and development. The program is characterized by the accessibility of the counseling staff, the low student-counselor ratio, the personalized attention and application support for all students, specialized assistance to student-athletes and student-artists, advocacy for all of our students, and general assistance with counseling for financial aid. With almost 65 years of combined experience, Poly’s College Counseling staff has worked in administrative, teaching, counseling, and college counseling fields, and has presented at conferences and trained college and high school counseling personnel across the country.

The College Counseling Department offers personalized attention to students and their families. Counselors assist second-semester juniors and first-semester seniors with college visits and opportunities to attend summer programs on various college and university campuses; work with class deans to assist in academic course planning; guide students in researching and establishing “reach,” “target,” and “likely” colleges, taking into consideration student and parent preferences; and advise students whether Early Action or Early Decision programs would be appropriate choices.

College counselors also provide an explanation of standardized testing for college and help students create individualized testing plans that coordinate the SAT I, SAT II, and/or ACT exams as necessary. Families are notified about college fairs, recruitment events, scholarship and financial aid opportunities, and testing deadlines. During the application process, college counselors write individualized letters of recommendation on behalf of the school for every senior.
