  • All Hands on Deck! Critical Thinking and Survival Skills 1-2

    Did you know that you can make one of the world’s strongest materials out of common plants? Or open a tin can without a can opener? Or make a pulley system using nothing but rope? All Hands on Deck! is a class that steps outside the pervasive technological landscape to help young learners hone fine motor, critical thinking, and survival skills. Each day, students will be faced with a new task in which they will have nothing but their own knowledge, newly acquired critical thinking skills and group collaboration efforts to help reach an end goal. Along the way they will develop self-confidence, independence, and an increased awareness of their surroundings while learning how to engage with the world in new, exciting and practical ways. Among other activities, students will be building, braiding, cultivating, fixing, foraging, navigating, orienteering and tinkering, all while learning practical and gratifying new skills to navigate life’s twists and turns more thoughtfully, gracefully and thoroughly.
  • Artistic Number Sense For Grades 1-2

    By the end of this 3 week course, students will have explored math through play and created art projects to increase mathematical thinking. Topics include composing and decomposing numbers, shapes, patterns, place value, equal groups, and more. Students will leave this course with a math/art portfolio and a better understanding of what numbers are.
  • Basketball Camp

    Cost: $200
    Basketball Camp is specifically designed for players who want to have fun and improve their skills in basketball. We will have daily contests and games. All activities will take place in the gym. Camp will stress basic individual offensive skills and all campers will be taught the proper way to shoot a basketball. Camp will include instruction in passing, ball handling, and scoring moves. We will play full court games every day.
     
  • Batters Up! -Baseball Clinic 1-3

    Do you want to hit the ball harder and more consistently? Do you want to be able to field ground balls and fly balls easier and with more confidence? Then this is the session for you. Open to boys and girls in grades 1 through 3 who want to improve and have more fun playing baseball or softball by improving their hitting and fielding. During this three week session we will improve the skill level through different drills and games.

    If you designed the perfect city, what would it look like? Would it be filled with toy stores, sports stadiums, and playgrounds? What would you need to make it a wonderful place to live? Constructing buildings from boxes and found objects, students in this course will brainstorm what the perfect city needs then decide how the city should be designed. As they build, students will make decisions on land use, facilities and design.

    Are you Crazy for Cookies, Koo Koo for Cupcakes, or Mad for Muffins? Well, if you are...this is the class for you. We will feature and bake a new cookie, cupcake, or muffin daily. Our culinary adventures will be complemented with cookie, cupcake or muffin related stories and inspired art. By the end of the session we will publish our own Cookbook filled with artwork and baker's comments. Please note, if allergies are an issue, nuts and dairy products may be in some of the recipes.

    Explore the world of logic and code through fun, interactive challenges on the iPad. Students will put their brains to the test while solving puzzles, creating programs with block code, and thinking critically with engaging games such as Osmo and Puzzlets. Students learn to collaborate with others meaningfully, investigate different problem-solving techniques, and persist in the face of difficult tasks.
  • Coding for Kids 2-3

    Coding for Kids is a beginner course for students who would like to explore the world of computer science and learn fundamental programming skills. Each computer scientist will engage in hands-on and collaborative experiences to understand and apply the basic fundamentals of programming to design and create simple drawings and games.

    What better way to spend your summer than to "Dance it Out!" Dance it Out is a total body, high energy, cardio dance workout that is infused with 20 plus styles of dance including Hip Hop, Bollywood, Line Dancing, Disco, 80’s, Broadway, African, Irish, Hula, and so much more. Dance it Out is all about having fun, being active, and learning about different cultures and styles along the way. Each class we will learn new songs as well as practice other favorites. From the Japanese fishermen's dance to the pop music of today, each class will end with lots of smiling, sweaty faces!

    Copper enameling (melting glass on metal) is a fun class in which students will make small projects of amazing beauty out of sparkling colors of glass. Students will create small projects of animals and pendants for wearable art. Small plates will become the format for designing cloisonné animals, landscapes, or whatever their imagination can conjure.

    Students will learn how to be positive, polite, respectful and well-mannered young children. This course offers students opportunities to learn proper ways of addressing adults, good table manners, and telephone etiquette. Students will learn social skills in fun and creative ways that they will use the rest of their lives.

    The Exploring Science through Experiments course is intended to provide young kids the opportunity to perform experiments through which they learn basic science principles. Just to name a few, experiments they will conduct in this age group includes ice cream making, density layered columns in eppendorf tubes, use of basic medical instruments (stethoscope, reflex hammer, tuning fork) to understand how the human body works, and learning the principles of conservation using Newton's cradle. The second session of this course will cover different material, so the second session is not a repeat of the first.

    This course will provide opportunities to introduce the Spanish culture through a variety of activities and materials while exploring different cultures and learning more about Spanish speaking countries. A program designed specifically for this age group will be used along with supporting hands-on activities such as crafts, games, songs, and storytelling. Three to four Spanish Speaking countries will be explored through arts, music, geography, history, dancing, food, and craft making.

    Students will be introduced to many facets of the game on an introductory to intermediate level. Students will start each day with a brief warm up and a motivational talk from the coach. Students will then work on individual skill development at both an offensive and defensive position. While the course will NOT be a full contact course, players will learn skills which can be translated into tackle football. The last part of practice will include 7 on 7 games, skill competitions and combine tests. The main goal of the course is to have fun and teach skills in a safe and supervised environment.

    Students will explore, create, imagine and engineer using the "big blue blocks" in the imagination playground. Design thinking will be inspired by by storybooks and once a week, we'll put the blue blocks away and engineer, design, create, explore and imagine with other unconventional items. Fun in the imagination playground will promote and reinforce important social and emotional learning skills like collaboration, communication, active listening, teamwork, problem solving and resilience.

    Get ready to dive into the world of American Girl Dolls! In this class students will come with their doll for a fun filled hour of crafts and more. Students will have the chance to share their dolls with the peers and learn about all of the different dolls from different times and places. In addition, students will complete crafts for themselves and their dolls. Each week will have a different theme in which the projects will be centered around. Themes include tea party, sleep over, and luau! It is not necessary for students to have an American Girl doll; all dolls and stuffed animals are welcomed!

  • Fun with Cubelets and Legos! 2-5

    In this course students will play fun games and complete challenging puzzles through the use of cublets and legos. Cubelets are magnetic blocks that can be snapped together to make an endless variety of robots with no programming and no wires. This course will that valuable critical reasoning, beginnng programming and mathematical thinking skills. Students have so much fun they don’t even realize they’re learning!

    In this fun, active course students will be placed in teams at the beginning of the session. Students will compete as Olympic-style teams and create their team names. Each day students will engage in an activity, challenge, game or sport such as wacky relay races, capture the flag, dodgeball competitions, flag football, soccer and even some water fun activities. At the end of the session, all students will receive a small prize.

    Drawing and connecting letters allows children to better memorize words and phrases. The movement of the hand stimulates the muscles involved in writing as well as the process of thinking. Handwriting, especially with Cursive, structures thought and creativity in a way keyboard typing can't. The successive construction of letters and words is more fluid and allows children to remember words and bridge ideas. It is a proven fact that Cursive writing improves cognition.

    In this class, we will review the basics of Print writing and explore the beauty and importance of Cursive handwriting. The goal is to improve each student's hand-eye coordination, hand muscle building and, most importantly, allow them to construct words, phrases and sentences with beautiful penmanship.

  • Italian through Fairy Tales - Pinocchio and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland K-2

    This class can be considered a mix between a theater and an art class, a “language laboratory.” In this course, students will learn the basics of the Italian language through experiences and activities. The children will listen to two famous fairy tales, Pinocchio and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland; they will create their favorite character puppet/mask, and perform the story. They will learn basic Italian vocabulary for kids such us the names of family members, colors, the numbers up to 20, animals, the parts of the body, food, and clothing. Poems and songs will enhance their learning of the language. Join in for a fun and educational class!

    In this course students will expand their cultural competency through cooking delicious dishes from the Americas. Science, math, health, social skills and cultural awareness will be reinforced through this hands-on class as students measure, mix and learn the origin of guacamole, arepas, quesadillas, Cuban rice pudding and more. They will explore the history of food and how climate and geography affect food preferences.

Virtual field trips will provide an opportunity for students to learn about important inventors and see STEAM in action worldwide.     “Left, left, left, right, left. We're the best, we're number one. Now let’s have some math fact fun!” Math Facts Boot Camp focuses on engaging each student in grade specific strategies to build on and further strengthen math fact skills. Second grade students will focus on addition, subtraction and a review of multiplication. This course is designed to reinforce math facts through a variety of math activities. Students will use math worksheets, iPads, computer games, cards, dice, and flashcards to assess their mastery of basic math facts. This course will provide them extra practice with essential math skills to develop the automaticity of math facts. Some games will include Double Trouble, Half as Much, Baseball Math, Defensive Struggle, Number Maker, Knock-Off Numbers, Pyramid Math, Dollar Race, Murb, Crazy Cone and many more.

    This course is designed to introduce, reinforce, and challenge students in math concepts based on the Singapore Math curriculum. Students will solve problems and work with manipulatives to assist with introducing and reinforcing math concepts that frequently appear in Second Grade. There will be a strong emphasis on hands-on activities and solving word problems. To help support lessons, students will use iPads to enhance their learning and to increase student engagement. Session 1 will focus on money, fractions, and linear measurement. Session 2 will focus on weight, time, and 3D geometry.

    Number sense is the intuitive feel for numbers and their relationships. The course is designed to help the young student, entering second grade in the fall of 2014, achieve a better sense of numbers and their relationships through fun games, puzzles, and projects. Students who achieve a strong understanding of how numbers relate to each other are better equipped to understand and utilize all the basic mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as a conceptual understanding of fractions.

    Students will have the opportunity to explore the concept of conservation by teaching it to extra-terrestrials that have just landed and don't quite understand the concept. They students will take their visitors on an expedition through the Americas to show these friendly aliens about habitats, foods, and scenes from the wide plains to the rainforest jungles to the Andes mountains while teaching them about the earth and nature. The students will work together to protect endangered species and learn ways to live on earth sustainably.

    Reader’s Theater is a research based instructional strategy that has been shown to improve reading fluency, comprehension and word choice. Each day, students engage in games targeting select skills such as phrasing, expression, pacing, interpretation, listening and presenting in front of a group and then study and prepare text by reading and rereading plays, poems, narrative fiction, and/or non-dramatic literature until they are performance ready. In addition, students may choose to express their creativity and connection to the text by adding theater elements when performing to the class (e.g., minimal props, costume items and staging). Each student will perform at least one time weekly. No memorization is necessary.

    The art of reading is learned and developed through engagement and practice.  The Reader’s Workshop class will focus on supporting students to work on their reading interests, fluency, and comprehension strategies.  Through methods such as reading aloud and shared reading, your child will have the opportunity to:  (a) explore and read a variety of genres and topics; (b) learn strategies to find ‘just right’ books; (c) read and talk about books they enjoy; and finally, (d) develop their reading interests and reader’s identity.

  • Sew Like You Mean It - Hand Sewn Menagerie

    In this fun and creative class, students will learn essential hand sewing techniques as they design, customize and hand-sew their own menagerie! Together we'll practice pinning and cutting, stitching and embellishing, as we create expressive animals from fabric, thread, and trimmings. Daily teacher demonstrations and personal guided instruction are designed to develop eye-hand coordination, patience and accuracy, and a sense of accomplishment, while completing a fun sewn project. The skills & concepts learned in this class create a solid foundation for progressing to machine sewing.
  • Soccer Camp

    Come join us for an exciting, educational, fun week of soccer. Whether students have never played soccer before or are experienced team players, they will have a place at Poly’s week-long soccer camp. Through skills training, small-sided games, futsal and much more, each player will get individualized attention in an effort to develop touch, confidence, and game sense. Poly’s own soccer coach Doug Jolly and his staff will share their expertise in working with kids of all ages and ultimately, hope to instill a love for the game of soccer in every child they work with. Each participant will receive a soccer ball and t-shirt.

    Students will create a variety of handbuilt ceramics using slab, pinch, and coil methods. A variety of surface textures and glazing techniques will be explored and utilized. Students will glaze their creations before kiln firing. Projects for 2018 Summer Clay include animal masks, cups & mugs, round embossed bowl, 3D relief plaque, seahorse, mermaid, and more. Students are asked to bring a backpack each day to Summer Clay class.

    This is a traditional camp-craft based course in which our younger students can explore their more creative and artistic abilities. This is a great way for them to unwind after a full day of summer classes. Students will be encouraged to use their imagination and work with all sorts of craft materials. Some activities include making seashore wind chimes, stone planters, kites, bottle cap jewelry, tie dye, lanterns and lots of projects from nature and recycled items. Students will also be water coloring and working with clay. Crafts will be different for both sessions.

    The goal of this class is to have fun and gain a love of swimming.     Who needs Build-a-Bear when you can sew your own? In this class, we will sew our own teddy bears! We will follow a sewing pattern and put our bears together by hand, with fabric, needle and thread. We will even design and sew some clothes for our bears. While we're sewing, write our own stories inspired by our creations. At the end of the course, we will take home our teddy bears to proudly share and treasure!

This class is designed to invigorate your child after a busy morning in the Poly Summer program. Students are required to bring their bathing suits to this class.     Shorely you will want to dive into learning about life under the sea! From dolphins and sharks to seahorses and sea turtles (and otters and octopuses, oh my!), we will fish for knowledge while discovering the wonders of ocean life. From under the sea, we will adventure ashore to explore tide pool creatures such as anemones, urchins and sea stars. Awareness of habitats, environmentally safe practices and endangered ocean species will be discovered along the way. And since we can't explore the ocean, the ocean will come to us in tanks and touch trays for a hands-on culmination of our oceanography adventure. Subject to availability.

    But beware, matey and scallywag, o’ scurvy Pirate Fridays, as treasure hunts abound and pirate tales and booty provide swashbuckling fun. Who knows wha’ may ensue when the’ Jolly Roger be a’ flyin’! Savvy?
  • We'll Be in Stitches! 1-3

    Needlepoint is a terrific way to unwind and relax while creating something handmade and beautiful. Students, little stitchers, will learn the basics of needlepoint and such stitches like Cross stitch, Half Cross stitch, Basketweave, Box stitch, Diamond stitch and more. Students will start out with a small canvas and, with practice and proficiency, move on to designing their own idea. Students will first sketch projects on paper then on canvas and finish their project by bringing it to life with beautiful threads and yarns. Needlepoint is a creative hobby that can be done anywhere (think waiting rooms and airports). With so many stitches to learn and projects to make it can be a lifetime hobby. Stitchers can continue at their own pace and level in session two, if desired.
  • World Cup Soccer Geography & Strategy 2-6

  • Yoga "en français" K-3

    This yoga class is presented in a playful and educational way. Each session incorporates energetic and soothing yoga positions, meditation, breathing exercises, group games and reading. Students will stretch, laugh and participate actively to the class by creating yoga positions, making up stories with yoga poses, and building warm up sequences. Each session ends with a calming story or a creative relaxation, inviting rest and awakening of the imagination. Students will be taught partly in French which is also a great way to learn another language while having fun. This course is taught by a French-native experienced yoga teacher who has taught yoga to kids for many years in France.
  • You Do WeDo - Beginning Robotics for the Younger Ages 2-3
