Poly fencing starts strong

Poly fencing started their season bright eyed and bushy tailed at 5:30 a.m. as they packed up and prepared for their first competition at the College of the Desert last Saturday. The team did very well, even going beyond team goals and expectations in only the first event of the season. Coach Laura Holmgren notes, “the fencers impressed the coaching staff with individual improvement; virtually every bout featured some textbook, beautiful touches and personal improvement. Whether it was the execution of a gorgeous disengage parry riposte by Carrie Hashimoto or a lightning-fast beat attack by Theo Fernandez, everyone scored at least a few 'perfect' touches, regardless of final bout outcome. This improvement bodes well for the future as the relatively young team gains more competitive experience.” Annette Lee ’19 finished with Poly’s highest result, placing sixth overall. This is a strong start for the team and gives them momentum as they travel to Gryphon Fencing Studio for a USFA E and Under Foil open event this Saturday.
