A Varsity tailgate sweep

This past weekend, the Panther Club hosted the annual Fall Tailgate highlighting games in girls volleyball, boys water polo, and football. The day started with the girls Varsity volleyball team hosting the 28th annual Poly Invitational Tournament. The girls earned a first-place spot in their pool, earning them a spot in the playoff run. The Panthers faced last year’s tournament champions, the Saints from St. Anthony, in the semi-finals. This year, the Panthers rewrote the story, beating the Saints in straight sets, after which they faced San Marino High School in the finals. Poly played San Marino two weeks ago at San Marino, where they won a very tight, five-set match. This time, the Panthers dug deep after a long, hot day and took care of business quickly, beating the Titans in straight sets in a best-of-three set match, taking home the title of tournament champions.

Boys water polo took to the Poly Aquatic Center and hosted the Golden Knights from St. Francis. Poly was off to a quick start, outscoring St. Francis 5-1 in the first quarter with very little let up throughout all four quarters. It was a team effort with goals coming from seven different players. The effort was led, however, by seniors Nick Wuthrich, tallying up five points, and Bradley Goedde and Joe Masters, adding three more points apiece. The final tally was Panthers 15, Golden Knights 7.

Poly football showed a strong effort as well on Babcock Field, hosting the Roadrunners from Ecole Mission Secondary School from British Columbia, Canada. It was a one-sided match-up with the Panthers handedly defeating the Roadrunners, shutting them out 55-0 and closing out the tailgate with a dominating win. This week the Panthers hit the road to face the Eagles from Brentwood. Check out the Athletic Calendar for a full schedule of this week’s events.
