Track trio finishes in top seven

Last Saturday, three members of Poly’s track team competed in the CIF-SS track and field divisional championship finals at Cerritos College. The three faced stiff competition under tough circumstances. It was a very hot and windy day that affected the runners, the distance runners in particular. Junior Xian Shivley was the first to hit the track in the 1600m. Shivley set a personal record in this event the week prior at the CIF-SS prelims, putting himself in a good place for the finals. However, the weather played a factor, slowing the times of the entire field. In the end, Shivley finished fourth in the 1600m and sixth in the 3200m. Following the 1600m, senior Chris Mathews took to the track for the 110m hurdles. Mathews ran a clean and focused race, not hitting a single hurdle. He not only set a new PR at 15.44, he broke the school record and finished third in the race. Congratulations Chris! Sophomore Brendan Fong rounded out the trio with his event, the 400m. Despite battling a hip injury, Fong was determined to race and placed seventh at 50.99. Congratulations to the trio on a great season!
