Poly track and field prep for league prelims

Last Saturday, the track and field team traveled to Carpinteria to compete in the Russell Cup. It was a good meet for Poly as they faced tough competition. The Varsity boys did well in their track events. Sophomore Brendan Fong placed first in the 400 meters, setting a new PR at 50.73. Sophomore Justin Fong also set a PR in the 200 meters at 22.60 and placed third. Junior Xian Shively set a PR in the 1600 meters at 4:27.65 and placed fourth in the race. Senior Chris Mathews competed in the 110m hurdles and finished second. The boys team also did well in the field events, with junior Haller Rice setting a PR in the triple jump at 40-07.50 and finishing third for the Varsity team and freshman Jackson Treister finishing second in the long jump at 18-05.25 for the frosh/soph team.

The Poly girls also competed well. Sophomore Ella Cornwell set a new PR in both shot put (4kg) at 31-04.25 (placing her at third for the frosh/soph team), as well as in the discus throw (1kg) at 75-01. Freshman Kylie Kishi PR’ed in the triple jump at 30-01.50. The big win went to freshman Zoey Mao for finishing first in the high jump at 4-11 for the frosh/soph team. The Panthers hope to use the Russell Cup as momentum going into the Prep League prelims. Poly will host the Prep League prelims tomorrow, April 21, at 5:30 p.m. at South Pasadena High School.
