Poly fencing team defends Gryphon title

Reported by Coach Laura Holmgren

Last weekend, the fencing team competed in their last match of the season, finishing on top. Varsity took second in the Gryphon High School Foil Team Challenge #2, going 1-1 in the final round and defeating the Gryphon team 5-3 to defend the perpetual team trophy they earned in the fall season. The all-sophomore team of A. Lee, Y. Siegel, and I. Kim pulled off a tremendous upset, capped with a come-from-behind win in overtime in the key of the Gryphon-Poly final match.

On the JV side, the frosh team of T. Fernandez, D. Mayo, and S. Johnson-Lacoss went undefeated on the day (4-0), capturing the gold in the event and defending the other perpetual team trophy in an eerily familiar final round. Mayo, down 4-1, battled back to win his bout 5-4 in overtime, giving Poly the match-winning fifth victory.
