Alumna Caitlin Burns '12 works with Poly dancers in preparation for upcoming performance

In the Upper School, members of the dance department are hard at work in preparation for their fall dance concert, "We are One." A group of seven advanced dancers have been working with alumna Caitlin Burns '12 during weekly rehearsals for a piece that explores the idea of going against the status quo. "I'm so happy to be able to work with Caitlin again," shares senior Beverly S. "It's nice to be able to work in a smaller group with dancers from different grade levels. Caitlin's choreography adds a refreshing dimension to this year's dance show, as it integrates both modern dance and pedestrian movements. She discussed with us her process in creating this piece, and we are trying our best to convey the messages of inclusion, exclusion, and individuality, which tie into the greater theme of the dance show this year."

This is the second visit from Caitlin, who first returned to Poly last winter to teach a few classes in improvisation and contemporary dance technique. She recently graduated from Santa Clara University as a double major in dance and psychology and plans to head to New York City to pursue dance and musical theatre. Her piece and 13 others will be presented Dec. 2-3 (see details below).

The Performing Arts Department is pleased to present the annual dance concert hosted by the Girls' Service League on Friday, Dec. 2, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in Garland Theatre. This family-friendly event features a silent auction at each show, with proceeds benefiting iThuba Innovation Hub, an organization in South Africa committed to STEM education for girls. Tickets can be ordered online. Questions may be directed to Robin Barnes at 626-396-6680.
