Poly's sister school, PS 161 from Beijing, returns to campus

For the seventh consecutive year, Poly's sister school, PS 161 from Beijing, China, visited Poly this past week. Twenty-nine students experienced home stays with Poly families over the weekend, and then toured the Poly campus, accompanied by their three faculty chaperones, and sat in on classes on Monday. They enjoyed a pizza lunch on Arden Lawn, and the two schools exchanged gifts. They departed later that afternoon to arrive home in time for Chinese New Year's.

"One of the highlights of the visits has been to see the level of trust grow between the parties and constituents from each school," shared Rick Caragher, co-coordinator of Poly's Global Initiatives Program. "Poly families have been gracious hosts and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to welcome students from the People's Republic of China into their homes."

Families who hosted the students shared meals and took their guests sightseeing. Some families and their 161 students visited the Huntington Gardens, others went to Santa Monica and dipped their toes in the Pacific, some ventured to Disneyland, a few went to LACMA, while some even went sailing on the Pacific Ocean, and many congregated together at homes or in Old Town Pasadena. "We've had a fantastic weekend," shared Poly parent Judy Penner, whose family hosted two visiting students from Beijing. Parent Tonita Fernandez said, "Mia and our family had a blast with our students! Thanks for the opportunity to participate."

After the visitors spent some time with her students, second grade teacher Suzie Arther '89 said "My kids thoroughly enjoyed the morning, and I hope our visitors did as well. Emma was a wonderful guide and helper!"

For each of the odd-numbered years going back to 2009, Poly has visited Beijing and spent a day at PS 161. Last year's hosting experience here and Poly's visit there helped inspire two Poly students to join School Year Abroad in Beijing this year. This was GIP's first event of 2014 and the first home stay of the year (with more to follow in the spring, including fifth-graders from Japan and eighth- and ninth-graders from France).
