Poly Panthers enjoy updated athletic facilities

After a recent review of Poly’s athletic facilities, existing facilities were repurposed to better respond to the needs of the teams, while providing additional space. “We were able to touch almost every program with these changes,” explained Athletic Director Steve Beerman.

What was formerly temporary housing for the Development Office, followed by the Science Department and Business Office, was transformed into an athletic space that is now used by the Fencing team. The space that had been used by the Fencing team in the Girls’ Gym was then turned in to a girls locker room and expanded weight room, which can now accommodate 24 students (compared to half that in the old facility). “By moving the weight room, we created more space for the boys’ locker room and added a team room for use by Poly and visiting teams,” Beerman said. The new location of the weight room also makes it more convenient and comfortable for use by Poly’s female athletes.

By making some minor changes, the athletic training room gained a little more square footage, which has allowed Athletic Trainer Rob Mikels to more athletes. “[Just] taking out the two little walls has allowed me to have more functional space,” Mikels said. “I am now able to utilize two treatment tables, where I only had one in the past, and I also have more space around the tables that allows me to perform treatments and evaluations more effectively. The minor renovation has added a major benefit to the athletic training program,” he explained.
