Boys Volleyball Opens Season With a Win

On Tuesday, February 21, Poly’s Boys Varsity Volleyball team opened their season with a non-league match up against the Knights from Ontario Christian High School. The two programs are familiar opening the season playing each other. This year, it was the Panthers’ turn to hit the road to Ontario and play in the Knights’ new facility for the first time. After finishing their season in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 5 playoffs last season and only graduating two seniors, the Panthers were eager to get on the court. Welcoming two new freshman to round out the roster, Poly came out strong and dominated Ontario Christian, defeating them in three straight sets 25-8, 25-15, 25-14. Their serving game was strong, making the match go by quickly.

The team took the rest of the week to prepare for their first of two tournaments this season. They will travel to Claremont on Saturday, February 25, playing in the one-day Webb School Boys Volleyball Invitational 2023 tournament. They are in a pool of four teams along with West Covina High School, who they defeated in the wild card round of the CIF-SS Division 5 playoffs last year, Damien High School, and South El Monte High School. Depending on how they finish in their pool dictates when they play in the playoffs. Third and fourth place finishers play at 2 p.m., and first and second place finishers play at 3 p.m. They hope to learn more about their roster at this tournament to help prepare them for the two-day Hollywood Showdown Tournament the following week at Providence High School in Burbank.
