On Sundays, We Fence

Poly Athletics is unique in that we have a flourishing fencing program. At the program's helm is founder Laura Holmgren, leading the team into its 15th season as an official Athletics team. Unlike Poly’s other sports, fencing events take place on Sundays. 

This past Sunday, September 11, Poly held scrimmage tournaments to help prepare the team for the rest of the season. Seventeen of the 20-member team participated, including four of its five freshmen fencers. Poly’s trademark orange socks were on full display.

Holmgren shared that “the coaches were pleased and impressed with the improvements since the start of the season with numerous textbook, beautiful attacks and ripostes.” The referees officiating the event also mentioned Poly’s exceptional sportsmanship. 

Poly fencers Max I. ’25 and Benji F. ’23 tied for third in the intermediate tournament. Griffin M. ’26 finished in a very close second after a close back-and-forth bout. 

Their next competition is scheduled for Sunday, October 9 at the Gryphon Fencing Studio in Murrieta. Congratulations to the team!
