PolyToday: Ideas take flight

Inspired by the Newbery Honors Book Dragonwings by Laurence Yep, fourth-graders recently built and then flew kites on Babcock field. Author Laurence Yep crafted a book loosely based on the account of a Chinese immigrant who made a flying machine in 1909. The flying machine was ultimately successful after much practice with kites, so this seemed a fitting celebration for the students upon completion of the book. Students created their own diamante poems (poems in the shape of a kite) about characters from Dragonwings that they wrote on their kites, and then let the kites fly on Babcock field.
