COMMUNITY READ: "Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? And Other Conversations About Race”

Please join us for a Community Read of Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum’s  seminal text, Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? And Other Conversations About Race (2017, 2nd edition). Poly parents, guardians, faculty and staff are invited to join this opportunity to learn and discuss in community. Breakout rooms will be divided between parents/guardians and faculty/staff separately.

Discussion facilitators Randolph Carter and Elizabeth Denevi bring decades of experience leading diversity, equity, and inclusion work throughout independent schools at the local and national scale. They will host 3 discussion sessions in April of Dr. Tatum’s groundbreaking work. This community read and related discussion sessions will be an opportunity for Poly community members to think about their own racial and ethnic identity development and how it informs our relationships and connections with each other. The goal is to think more deeply about our own racial and ethnic identity development so that we can better connect across our various identities and build community together.

Each facilitated discussion session will focus on a specific section of the reading, which is listed below. These Zoom meetings will offer time for discussion, reflection, and questions about talking about race and ethnicity with each other and with our children.
