Big Week of Wins for Athletics

This week, Poly’s winter sports teams competed in some big games on the road.

Poly’s basketball teams headed to Arcadia on Monday to take on the Kares from Rio Hondo Prep. All three levels of the boys program took care of business beating their three teams by a minimum of 19 points. The Frosh/Soph team played first, beating Rio 52-32. The Junior Varsity team followed suit defeating the Kares 63-44. The Varsity team sealed the deal beating Rio handily 60-22.

The girls team kept it much closer. Rio Hondo has historically been a tough opponent for our girls program, and this season is no exception. At first, it looked like the Kares were going to capture the victory over the Panthers as they had done numerous times before, as the Panthers were down most of the game. However, the girls basketball team was not going down without a fight. Under the leadership of veteran player Paige L. ’24, Poly came from behind and fought back. She turned on the fire, going 8-8 at the line, and finished the game with a total of 34 points carrying the Panthers to a 53-48 victory over Rio Hondo. It was a very exciting league win for the team.

The next string of league games are tomorrow, Friday, January 21, when all four teams head down to Palos Verdes Peninsula to face the Dolphins from Chadwick School. The games will start at 3 p.m. with the Boys Frosh/Soph team. The Boys JV team follows at 4:30 p.m., and the two Varsity teams follow with a 6 p.m. tipoff for the Girls Varsity team and a 7:30 p.m. tipoff for the Boys Varsity team. Chadwick does not allow spectators on their campus currently, but please stream the games live. Check Twitter @PolyAthletics for updates and information.

Another big win from the weekend was from Poly’s Girls Water Polo team. Although the Panthers were the away team, they still had a home-field advantage against Mayfield because the Cubs use the Poly Aquatics Center as well. After a dominating performance, it did not seem that location mattered. The Panthers took control of the game early on and never let up. The Panthers beat the Cubs 22-10 under the leadership of its veteran players Liz F. ’24 and Xotchil O. ’24. They took this momentum with them to Brentwood School on Wednesday, January 19 where they tallied one more win to their season record after beating the Eagles 15-7. Next, Poly hosts Chadwick on Friday, January 21 in the Poly Aquatics Center at 3:45 p.m.

There have been many changes and updates to this winter season. Be sure to check out the Athletics Calendar to stay on top of the sports schedule.
