Girls Water Polo Opens League Play

Last year, Poly’s girls water polo program competed on coed teams with the boys. Going into this season, Coach Sean Grab and his team were unsure who would show up after an unusual season. The team was excited to welcome nine new players to its program made up of all freshmen and sophomores. This 11-person squad is young and very new to the sport. They rely on the experience and leadership of its two junior returners Xochitl O. ’23 and Liz F. ’23.

On December 3, after playing three pre-season and non-league games, the Panthers hosted the Wolves from Flintridge Prep to open the Prep League season. It was a very exciting back-and-forth game. Both teams worked hard to get up the pool and back. After four quarters, it was the Panthers’ efforts that earned them the 18-12 victory over the Wolves. Their efforts were led by Liz F.’s 12 goals. Three other players contributed to the win as well. On the defensive end, it was Xochitl O. that locked down the two-meter line.

Coach Grab said, “We are just looking to improve every day and take care of the things we can control. If we do that, the results will start to turn more and more in our favor.”

The team has a packed schedule this week playing on December 7 at Webb School. Then, they host back-to-back games on December 9 against Pasadena High School and December 10 against South Pasadena High School. Good luck to the team as they continue to gain experience and work hard in the water.
