In Conversation with Dr. Robert George and Dr. Cornel West: A Discussion about Divergent Points of View, Civility, and Friendship

Join us for a timely and thought-provoking conversation with Professors Robert George and Cornel West, the “ideological odd couple,” about the importance of civil discourse in light of our nation’s political and cultural divides. As friends and colleagues, Dr. George and Dr. West explore opposing policy views, respectfully disagreeing as well as finding common ground across deep personal and political differences.

About Professors George and West

Robert P. George is McCormick Professorship of Jurisprudence and Director of the Hames Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University. He has served as Chairman of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom and on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and the President’s Council on Bioethics.
 
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Swarthmore, Professor George holds the degrees of J.D. and M.T.S. from Harvard University and the degrees of D.Phil., B.C.L., D.C.L., and D.Litt. from Oxford University, in addition to 22 honorary doctorates. His essays have appeared in numerous scholarly publications including the Yale Law Journal, Harvard Law Review, Review of Politics, and Review of Metaphysics. His books include Making Men Moral: Civil Liberties and Public Morality and The Clash of Orthodoxies.
 
Cornel West is Professor of the Practice of Public Philosophy at Harvard University and holds the title of Professor Emeritus at Princeton University. He has also taught at Union Theological Seminary, Yale, and the University of Paris.
 
Professor West graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard in three years and obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy from Princeton University. He has written 20 books and has edited an additional 13. He is best known for his classics, Race Matters and Democracy Matters, and for his memoir, Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud. His most recent book, Black Prophetic Fire, offers an unflinching look at nineteenth and twentieth-century African American leaders and their visionary legacies. In furthering his passion to keep alive the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. West is a frequent guest on television programs such as CNN, C-Span, and has appeared in over 25 documentaries.
