A Big Week for Boys Basketball

This spring has brought Poly’s Boys Varsity Basketball team much success. Though the winter sport is being played in the spring, the team has found its stride.

The team started the season strong defeating all its non-league opponents. The real challenge came when they opened up their league season against Providence High School. Providence has always proved itself to be a very tough opponent as they pride themselves in their strong basketball program. Last Friday, the two teams went head-to-head in Gamble Gym and the Panthers showed up firing on all cylinders.

Coach Hall noted that the team played great defense. At one point, the Panthers led by 11-points. The Pioneers chipped away at that lead cutting it down to one point in the fourth. But it was the Panthers who pulled out the win with a final score of 66-61. Seniors Dimitri M. ’21 and Brandon S. ’21 both went six for nine behind the arch. Jack W. ’22 came away with 14 points and Justin O.’23 finished with 17 points and eight rebounds.

The Panthers took this momentum and carried it into their game against Prep League rival, Flintridge Prep. Senior leader Kareem A. ’21 returned from an injury and came back strong putting up 13 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. Once again, Justin O. ’23 had a strong game with 15 points. Coach Hall commented that Dimitri M. ’21 was a sound point guard against the Wolves playing exceptional defense. They were all factors in the big 55-40 victory over Flintridge.

Their successes have earned them the spot as the number one ranked team in CIF-SS Division 4AA. Congratulations to Poly’s Boys Varsity Basketball team! Send them well wishes as they look to continue their winning streak against Chadwick on Friday, May 7 at 7 p.m.
