Exciting Games for Poly's Panthers

Last week, Poly’s Girls Varsity Soccer team stepped on to the field at the Rose Bowl for the first time in Poly’s history. This historic venue set the stage for an exciting match with the Mayfield Senior School’s Cubs. It was a tough battle for both teams with a scoreless first half after much back and forth. In the second half, the Cubs caught a break and scored on the Panthers. A handball near the goal was called leading to a goal-scoring penalty kick. Despite the number of shots on goal from Mayfield, goalie Vivian H. ’23 did an incredible job keeping the score down and limiting the Cubs to only two points. The final score was Mayfield over Poly, 2-0. As Upper School English teacher and resident tweeter Laura Holmgren tweeted, “this was the first women’s soccer game held in the Rose Bowl in 627 days.”

Last week also offered firsts for some of Poly’s other teams including Boys Varsity Volleyball and Boys Varsity Tennis. Poly’s Boys Varsity Volleyball team returns with one Varsity member from last year’s team and three JV players from last year’s program. It also welcomes four new freshmen to the squad. With a relatively young team, it is the first time many of these boys have ever played volleyball together. Despite their  inexperience playing together, they were able to pull off their first win of the season against Chadwick, sweeping the Dolphins in straight sets 3-0. They hope to continue this momentum as they face Flintridge Prep on Tuesday, April 27.

Another first victory came for Poly’s Boys Varsity Tennis team. They, too, faced Chadwick last week. After dropping the first match to Buckley School on Wednesday, the Panthers rebounded and stepped up against Chadwick. As coach Saxton said, “Poly relied on its depth to secure the crucial sets to win the match. The doubles pairs won the bulk of the 12 sets, demonstrating the importance of balance in the lineup.” The boys hope to extend their win streak as they face Flintridge Prep on Monday, April 26.
