A Pair of Basketball Wins

Last night, Poly’s Girls and Boys Varsity Basketball teams traveled down the street to San Marino High to take on the Titans in their first games of the season. The girls Varsity team started the evening. The team welcomes new Head Coach Chris Rodgers and new Assistant Coach Neil Holmes to join veteran Assistant Coach Dana Huley. The team also adds four new freshmen to the squad. It was a rough start for the Panthers who only scored three points in the first quarter. Luckily, the team soon found their groove putting up four consecutive field goals in the second. After four quarters, the Panthers outscored the home team by nearly doubling their score 43-24.

Boys Varsity Basketball took the court next. The veteran team returns to the court under the leadership of its four seniors Kareem A. ’21, Demetri M. ’21, Jackson S. ’21, and Brandon S. ’21. The Titans bring a tough crowd to their games and last night was no different, except for fewer fans in attendance. The Panthers pushed through and dominated, beating the Titans by 19 points. The final score was 78-59.

From Brandon S. ’21, “It felt amazing to get back on the court, as it’s been over a year since we’ve suited up for Poly. It was also awesome to see the energy the team had from the start. It didn’t seem like anybody needed any extra motivation for the game.”

Poly’s baseball team also hosted their first home game against Flintridge Prep yesterday afternoon. Poly struck first bringing in three runs in the first inning. Prep answered back with two of their own runs in the second, but the Panthers quickly silenced them with three more runs to close out the second inning, bringing the score 6-2. The next three and a half innings went scoreless until Poly put up four more runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Flintridge tried to rally back at their final at-bat bringing home three more runners. Poly was able to stop their comeback efforts beating Flintridge 10-5 for their home opener. Senior David M. ’21 led the game with three hits and 6 RBIs.

Poly finishes out the week with a Girls Junior Varsity Coccer game vs. Mayfield Senior School, Girls Varsity Tennis vs. Mayfield Senior School, and Boys Varsity Soccer hosts Flintridge Prep on Friday, and Boys JV Baseball takes on Monrovia High School on Saturday morning.
