Poly Resumes Athletics Competitions

Poly Athletics has worked diligently to continue to provide fall athletes with some semblance of a season while maintaining all safety and health protocols. Although some of our recent competitions have looked unconventional, these games have provided a positive and unforgettable experience for student-athletes.

Last week, Poly hosted competitions in girls volleyball, boys water polo, girls water polo, fencing, and—for the first time since 1997—coed water polo. Competitions began Thursday afternoon with the Poly Girls Varsity Volleyball team hosting Flintridge Prep outside in the middle of Babcock Field. Although these indoor players were a little out of their element playing outdoors and having to deal with the elements, both teams enjoyed the opportunity to compete. They played a best of three matches, playing the third set to 15 points regardless of the outcome of the first two sets.

Poly’s Girls Junior Varsity Volleyball team followed the Varsity team playing Flintridge Prep for three sets as well. In the aquatics center, Poly hosted Prep for both girls and boys water polo matches. Both teams took the opportunity to honor their seniors in their last water polo game of their Poly careers. Poly emerged victorious, though both teams walked away grateful for the opportunity to compete.

On Friday, the aquatics center came alive again as the Poly Boys Varsity Water Polo team hosted St. Francis. On Saturday, Poly welcomed Chadwick School to campus for a coed water polo game. This was the first time both boys and girls played together on Poly’s team since 1997, before Poly had a girls team.

The Girls Varsity Volleyball team took to Babcock Field once more where they played in a best-of-five match against Chadwick. They also honored their seniors before this match as they played their last volleyball game of their Poly career. Poly was able to, once again, take home the wins of the day. However, the joy these student-athletes displayed made everyone feel like winners. Poly’s fencing team rounded out the weekend by holding an inter-squad competition on Sunday.

With the exception of Poly’s football team, who is still practicing for their competitions, Poly Athletics will transition to spring sports with the hope that the season will look more traditional if the COVID-19 numbers continue to exhibit a downward trend.
