First-Graders Learn About the Civil Rights Movement

Floriane Siegel's first-grade class has been learning about the Civil Rights Movement and the importance of protests and marches, especially as they relate to social justice and the Black Lives Matter movement. As part of their Reader's Theater about Martin Luther King Jr., the students learned about the influential leadership of Dr. King and Rosa Parks, practiced speaking with conviction, and performed the powerful song “We Shall Overcome.” As they continue learning about other important Black leaders and legends throughout the year, the students have felt empowered to create their own grassroots movements to ensure equality in their community. The students are planning to email Lower School Director Paula Martin and Head of School John Bracker to encourage a time where students can sit and make signs and have a peaceful protest in support of Black Lives Matter. Please view the Reader's Theater video below.
