GIP Event: Understanding the Conflict Between Armenia and Azerbaijan and Its Impact From Nagorno-Karabakh to Southern California

February 17, 6-7 p.m. PST

Panel Discussion: Saira Mohamed ’96, UC Berkeley Professor of International Law; Salpi Ghazarian, Director of the USC Institute of Armenian Studies; and Steve Swerdlow, USC Professor of Human Rights.

In September of 2020, war erupted in the Nagorno-Karabakh region when Azerbaijan attacked the area, an unrecognized republic populated by Armenians but considered by Azerbaijan to be within its sovereignty. This assault was a resumption of outright military hostilities that had first taken place between 1990 and 1994. This panel of highly esteemed scholars will provide an objective review of the tensions between the two nations, address the possibilities for peace after last November’s controversial ceasefire, and explore humanitarian efforts going forward. The discussion will also examine the conflict’s ripple effects on many regional and even global powers, and further into our own Southern California communities.
