GIP Event: The Ripple Effect of Native Voices

Tom Allard, a Shawnee Cherokee, is a charter member of the artists' ensemble at Native Voices (Autry Museum) and Poly’s resident storyteller. He will tell the story of the native American Sequoyah, who in 1809 created 86 symbols representing phonetics which emulated the advantages that white society derived from its own written language. Sixty-five subsequent syllabaries from 21 scripts empowered literacy and revealed insights in indigenous peoples from West Africa to China. Allard’s story about the Sequoyah will convey the ripple effect of the wonder of language and the power of preserving native voices. Please join us for this Zoom event Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. by registering at this link.
