Different Ships, Same Storm

Poly and PFS! students join students from around the world to create a personal and collaborative visual storytelling platform.

Over the summer, Poly and PFS! students joined Different Ships, Same Storm, a global project featuring the personal experiences of youth during The COVID-19 Pandemic. Through photography and writing students from New York City, Buffalo, Portland, Pasadena/Los Angeles, Tampico, Mexico, Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Siem Reap, Cambodia, and Kefar Saba, Israel share the pandemic experience and the journey they took to discover themselves and build a new sense of community.

The nine Poly and PFS! participants of this incredible program did field work in photography and text and met weekly over Zoom to search within themselves and examine their environment to create art to share with others. This invitation encouraged individuals to process their own experiences with COVID-19 and to learn from the experiences of their peers around the globe.

Different Ships, Same Storm partnered with organizations such as Narrative 4, Art Works For Youth, The Packer Collegiate Institute, Just Buffalo Literary Center, The Most Important Picture, and E² Education and Environment. Students involved in the program culminate their experience through a series of story exchanges facilitated by Narrative 4.

Through the launch of a website and an Instagram page the students aim to gather other voices and grow their community online. The Different Ships, Same Storm project can be viewed and submitted to on @differentshipssamestorm and https://www.differentshipssamestorm.com/
