CIF-SS Releases 2020-21 Fall Playoff Groupings

In the past, the CIF playoff groupings are based upon a two-year weighted power point total. This takes into account the strength of the regular season; schedule results and points are weighted depending on the strength of the opponent. It also looks at how well the team did in the playoffs and awards bonus points for each round the team advances. This method was used to group the following fall sports: boys water polo, cross-country, girls tennis, and girls volleyball.

Poly’s teams will enter the 2020-21 season as follows; boys water polo in division 5, cross-country in division 5, girls tennis in division 2, and girls volleyball in division 1/division 2. The exception to this method is football. Football playoff divisions will be determined at the end of the regular season based on the Cal Preps Rankings and the strength of their schedule. Football is the first sport to try out this new method of rankings in hopes that other sports will follow suit in the future.
