Coach Heidi Strauss Steps Up as Head Girls Varsity Soccer Coach

With the exit of Pat Gray as the girls Varsity soccer head coach after 16 years at its helm, coach Heidi Strauss steps in to steer the program forward. Strauss started at Poly in 2007 as a Physical Education teacher and was offered the assistant coach position by Gray. She states, “I learned a lot from Pat. We could talk about different scenarios and work together as a team, and I’m a better coach because of that. I know he is still on campus, and I’m sure I will be in his office talking soccer, but I will miss coaching with him every afternoon. I thank Pat for making me a better coach and for all of the efforts he poured into the program for us.”

Strauss is very excited to assume the role of head coach for the girls Varsity soccer program. What she loves most about coaching are the kids. She loves the way the students, "challenge her, frustrate her, make her laugh, and make her proud.” Poly soccer has a legacy of playing with integrity, heart, and pride, and Strauss hopes to continue that tradition. She also plans on what she would like build now as the head coach, the balance between hard work and having fun. Coach Strauss wants her team to be able to have fun and play well amidst the joy.

She is also excited about still being able to coach with Jamie Bell when she reflects, “Coach Bell is an asset to our program, not only in her soccer knowledge and training abilities, but as a great person, and the players really respect her.” Both Strauss and Bell bring a lot of soccer knowledge to the field, and since the two have been coaching side-by-side as assistants, the transition of coaching together as head and assistant should be seamless. Strauss is grateful for the confidence Steve Beerman, Poly's Athletic Director, has shown in her and is eager to make the Poly community proud.
