Fencing beats big school in Gryphon High School Team Foil Challenge

Poly’s fencing team competed in the Gryphon High School Team Foil Challenge last weekend, when they faced much bigger schools. The Varsity team, consisting of Caroline Hashimoto, Samuel Johnson-Lacoss, and Rufus Marcussen, defeated the team from Mater Dei in the finals. They lost to Mater Dei in the pool round 7-2 but were able to win the finals 5-3. The winning touch was scored by junior Rufus Marcussen against a fencer he had previously been defeated by in the pool round.
The second Varsity team, consisting of Patricia Hashimoto, Theo Fernandez, and Ryan Lavery, tied for third place with Chaminade. Despite having lost to Chaminade in the pool round, they decided to fence off for third place instead of settling for tied. Although the Poly fencers ended up losing, it was a great show of sportsmanship on their part.

Coming in second place in the JV event was the team led by sophomore Aleena Bhatti, including Libby Konjoyan, Edward Lee, and Benji Fernandez. Following them in third was the team led by Jacob Schuster, including William Wang, Colin MacLeod, and Edith Stevenson.
